The frogs behind? Sounds like the opposite to me. I think the only reason the shops may open in the morning is for the frog 'baguette' which does not last long. Work to live, don't live to work........

Macron is determined to push ahead and relax French labour laws starting with the railways which are massively in debt. The workers enjoy incredible perks and cannot be sacked. This is his Thatcher moment if the workers win he is finished as reform was a key plank in his program. I saw an article explaining the railway workers perks but I can't find it. Anyway the French are revolting.

You could argue the UK is not the best template for working hours. Even more so the US, where work commitment could be seen to fill the gap previously taken by religion. But fair play to Macron, and the French for electing him. Change will happen, retiring at 52 is not sustainable. It’s just a case of long and slow (UK pensions) or quick and deep (Greek pensions). Both are hard to bear, but the former at least gives more time to plan.

The French have a higher productivity level than the UK, around 20% higher. They are also have one of the lowest levels of 'unionisation' in Europe.

I heard that yesterday I think its 11% quite surprising really as I would have thought it would be higher as they always seems to strike. Regarding productivity and without evidence I am suspicious about these numbers. Apparently not all governments use the same methodology and in some case I wonder if there is outright cheating ALA Greece. I have seen productivity league tables where countries you would not associate with efficiency and hard work are better than us. It does make you wonder. I do think we have a problem with productivity but I wonder if other countries are fudging their numbers.
