Having visited the dentist, she wanted me to follow up with an appointment to see their hygienists and got quite indignant when I announced that I find them unnecessary, overpriced and a total cop-out by dentists. Now I'm sure there's going to be someone on Hol whose wife, partner, sister etc is one, and who will spring to their defence on what a great job they do and their contribution to the healthcare system. Which may be true but............ a brief comparison of other qualified people who contribute to my life/wellbeing may show what I mean: My Osteopath: a 4 year training degree course, followed by 5 years as an Associate in a practice before setting up on his own. On going training essential to retain his registration with his professional body. Cost - £38 for usually 40/45 mins of treatment My local car mechanic: 5 year apprenticship, on going development for registration of MOT testing station and to keep up with new car models/technology. Dental Hygienist: 5 GCSE's, 2 A Levels and a 2 year training course. Cost £38 for a 20 minute appointment of which probably barely 15 is spent working on my teeth. Scaling, polish and sorry, but I don't need to be told how to brush my teeth at my age! I also happen to know (having done accounts for several s/employed hygienists) that of that £38, she will be lucky to get half! It's a total con by dentists to offload the boring, simple, routine work and make a profit at the same time for something that, in my lifetime, was always part and parcel of a dental check-up. Rant over - Do you love or hate yours?

I've used two in Beckenham and they have been good, attractive girls too . I pay over £50 (from memory) and think it's worth it every 6 months as your teeth are important. Edited by Penge Eagle (29 Mar 2018 9.10pm)

Edited by Penge Eagle (29 Mar 2018 9.10pm) My last place had 3 different dental hygienists over my time there, all 3 were Australian and all looked identical and very attractive too. I do agree with the OP but maybe a more attractive hygienist would make you visit more often. Or maybe I’m just a typical bloke.

I'm not sure what I pay as it is buried within a monthly private Denplan system. I do get a hygienist appointment every 3 months though and feel they do a good job. I do feel though that Dentists per se are very expensive. Mind you so are my car services.

My dentist here in France has no hygienist or receptionist. He does it all himself for 24 euro a visit, 70% of which is reimbursed by the state.

I hadn't been to the dentists since before our play off win over Blackburn, and some. I've just had only had 2 fillings on my molars over the last 2 visits in the last 6 months after some grinding on coleslaw. Complimented on my dental and oral hygiene on the first visit. They couldn't believe how good they were. And now I'm using an electric toothbrush they're even cleaner. Always use an electric toothbrush and £4.50 Oral B toothpaste reduced to £2.50 on special offer. I know they say so but it will improve your teeth. I guarantee it. It actually wasn't them who guaranteed oral b or the electronic toothbrush either. Edited by Rudi Hedman (29 Mar 2018 11.07pm)

They may appear not very well qualified but you could say the same with many other skilled jobs that doesn't define some ones or the profession they work in which would show if it's so easy you would have too many qualified making the prices cheap. These people if you get good one really do a good job especially for children. Now you could say why doesn't dentists just do this well they could but they get paid more so the price would be higher plus look at the time they would be wasting doing this rater then procedures they are only qualified for. At the end of the day when it comes to any form of dentist related stuff its not the dentist or hygienists that are important it's people them self and the diet/consumption which really has biggest impact. look way back in history before tooth brushes and paste how did they keep there teeth diet

It depends on why the dentist feels that you need to visit the hygienist. If it's just for a quick scale and polish then perhaps it is a waste of time and money but if you have any form of gum disease a more thorough cleaning with sonic wotsit plus scraper thingy will help keep the gum disease at bay and enable you to keep your own teeth for longer.
