Health effects of diet and nutrition form a very minor part of medical training claim medical students. So if this is the case then the information regarding diet given by health professionals must be questioned as they had little knowledge or training in this field themselves.
"We're taught about 10 to 24 hours over five to six years in medical school on nutrition."
I remember seeing this information in a documentary recently and being quite shocked. The basis for good health is diet and its amazing to think that medical students receive so little training in nutrition at all. Its poor diet that causes health problems at the end of the day and a healthy diet will prevent us needing to visit doctors in the first place. Im sure if doctors had better training in nutrition they'd be more likely to recommend a vegan diet to their patients in order to reverse and prevent many of the diseases that are prevalent in society today.
Shocking statistic and no wonder so many people are suffering from ill health when there is so much misinformation out there.

I've never been taught nutrition nor needed to attend a course.
I do know however that fruit, veg, meat in moderation etc.. Is good for you, and that too much fried or process food is bad for you.

It's not rocket science.

If you have high cholesterol you are given a sheet of things that are good and things to avoid.

It's one sheet with all the relevant info.

Also, exercising is good.

I'm not sure that I'd call 10-24 hours of teaching nothing. Given standard teaching hours that's up to 4 days or so on nutrition and it's a quote from a single individual that may not represent other medical Schools. The five to six year timeframe is also a bit of a red herring as that implies that all of that time is study when in fact a considerable portion is spent in practice, supposedly where medical students are meant to learn about such matters. As University students they are also expected to study such matters independently as well as through direct teaching. These students at Bristol have found nutrition interesting and focused on it. Others, as they note through the presence of medical societies, choose to focus on other subject areas. Nutrition is without doubt important and GP's may well need additional knowledge in this respect but they can also already refer people onto dieticians or health visitors or specialist nurses/medics for specific conditions like diabetes. Ultimately, as the article notes, diet is a lifestyle choice and the real challenge for medics is not one of nutritional knowledge but one of persuading people to actually change their diet and lifestyle.

There's no money in prevention, though.

Does a vegan diet turn you nuts?

Heh. Was waiting for the mention of veganism

But on topic, the basics of nutrition are very simple. Given the huge amount of critical material doctors have to cover I think 10-24 hours on nutrition seems about right.

Not any nuttier than you but it will lessen the likelihood of developing disease in later life according to a growing number of doctors. Read the china study and you'll find out more.

The world isn't going to turn vegan.

But technology will eventually end meat farming......just as technology is going to end many jobs and professions.

Kids born today will end up seeing cows and chickens in zoos instead of farms......in the west anyway.
