I have always liked James Tomkins whole hearted performances, is what i would call an old fashioned centre back and chips in with important goals this season.

Love the guy. Have seen worse centre halves called up for England (Kelly has a cap) but not sure he's quite there yet. Hell of a player for us though.

Bit of a misleading title to the thread. I thought he had been called up. England could do a lot worse but he would come back injured. If he got the chance though, I would be made up for him. Rated him since we signed him and wet spam fans still love him. That says something.

A bit off topic but didn’t want to start a new thred, was jimmy Mac not in the Scotland squad? He has been playing well recently and Scotland are pretty s***. Surprised not to see him playing last night.

I think McArthur was pushed aside so that the cloth-headed nitwits could get a look at McTominay, so it may not last. There's a lot of real dross in that squad.

I rate him a lot higher than Cahill or Jones or even Smalling, he does all the simple stuff well and is a threat in the box. At palace I think his decision making has really improved, having the responsibility of playing next to Sakho and AWB has really made him step up to be the calm head in defence. Think Walker and Stones are the two footballing centre halves who can play out from the back and have a bit of pace. There is a space for a proper defender in the back 3. It’s maguire that is rightfully first pick for that role, but I’m hard pressed to think of anyone in better form or condition than Tonks to be the cover.

Great defender when he is fit, sadly, if in the unlikely event that he was ever selected he would probably get injured lifting his case off the baggage belt at the airport!
