The current thread in Palace Talk about the man who went on to the pitch on Sunday reminded me of the oldest pitch invader I've ever seen. It was in the game against Fulham, which we won 3-2 after being 0-2 down, and which sent us into the old First Division for the first time. I think Mark Lazarus scored the winner (at the Holmesdale end), and, as was his custom, he set off on a run round the pitch. As he raced along the Arthur touch line (not that the Arthur was built then), a man who must have been eighty if he was a day somehow struggled over the side wall and trudged on to the pitch, waving his walking stick. I thought at the time that he'd probably been waiting seventy years to see that promotion, and I'm pleased to say that he wasn't rugby-tackled, arrested or ejected, but just escorted back to the terracing.

Cliff Jackson got the winner and Mark used run round and wave to his mum - great boxing family.

Do you remember the song "If I had a hammer" being played? I usually stood at the Whitehorse but for the Fulham game was the Arthur side. I was first in queue for the Man Utd game at the Whitehorse end having got there about 10am!

Don't recall this. Early sixties, used to play it and we used to bang the advertising hoardings to the song.

Quite right JRW2, The Arthur wasn't finished but only had the roof on. In fact if I remember rightly from about mid-March they added a bit more every game until the whole side was covered. Health & Safety would never allow it now.

I remember the Lazarus celebration ! When I was living in Ilford I used a firm called Lazarus to move house there. Turned out was owned by a son of Mark's. Had a very good afternoon with him & Mark talking over the old days etc. This was in 1988.
