Foreign and championship players generally take longer to adapt in the premier league , so we're going to have to pay the going rate. Parish get your cheque book out and back Roy in the transfer market please...

It ought to be reasonably obvious that we are not going to stock our whole squad with players costing between ten and forty million pounds, say, and demanding wages between say sixty and over a hundred thousand pounds a week. We don't have the money, there aren't enough players like that available, and we would breach FFP. We certainly should have some players like this because of the experience and leadership they provide and because there's little risk of non-performance (but then look at Benteke); however, we need the capability to spot players who can be brought to the Premier League on much less money and make an impact there despite not having been there before. That this is possible is demonstrated by the examples of Milivojevic and Riedewald, who (now) both look like PL-standard players to me. The former was a find, and the latter has started to perform on that stage because of the input of Hodgson. To do that you need the experience and expertise of appraising players and understanding what they will be capable of under your management and Hodgson and Freedman between them should have the skills, contacts and knowledge to do it. They are bound to land some duds but then we have a £30m, 100k-per-week dud sitting in our dressing room right now. Having said that if we have say £20m or £30m available (e.g. money we didn't spend in the Summer) we should use it now.

We've spunked large amounts on 'proven' Premier League players and by and large it hasn't panned out. Our best players since promotion have been academy graduate Wilfried Zaha, league one signing Yannick Bolasie and unknown foreign import Milivojevic. Quite happy to sign some young, talented unknowns and give them a platform to prove they should be at an even bigger club.

"Get your cheque book out, Noades!" was a common cry around these parts back in the day. Haven't heard cries for the ol' cheque book production for a while though!

There were two or three deals we were trying to complete on deadline day which didn't end up going through; that money must still be in the bank. All I'm suggesting is that within a reasonable transfer budget (if you can call anything reasonable in a market where van Dijk changes hands for £75m) we really need to find other ways than splashing £30m on the likes of Benteke (that deal today would probably be more like £45m).

The bottom 10 clubs won't sell us anything if there is a whiff of a possibility that they will do anything. The top 6 won't be releasing an awful lot who have played much this season, unless the Beast Mark 2 is available. We need to look abroad like last Jan. Of the 3 permanent signings, Luka has looked by the far the best over PVA and Schlupp. All were similar price.

Luka, Dann and McCarthur were all signed from non PL clubs and all hit the ground running perfectly and are up there with our best players.
