Richard Branson is stopping the Daily Mail being sold on his trains because "it is not compatible with our beliefs". I guess he means him being a leading capitalist in the UK and a significant user of tax havens? Edited by chelys (09 Jan 2018 6.13pm)

I guess Branson is more of your EU-friendly, equal-opportunities tax-avoiding devourer of public sector contracts.

A Branson publicity stunt. He is a world class self promoter and this is the latest in a long line of similar stunts. This doesn’t make him a bad person but as I instinctively am against censorship, oppose this move.

It is more to do with the fact that they only sold 70 copies a day, equivalent to one every four trains. He has just spun it to make it look at if it is for moral reasons, and to get his face in the papers. I'm surprised that they sell any newspapers on-board anymore.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

My default position is to defend free speech. I do not believe that is the issue here. Branson can sell what he likes. If people are really that concerned then I suggest they buy a copy of the Mail at the station and waive it under the noses of the Virgin crew. As to motives both Branson and the Daily Mail have agendas. Both are political, additionally the Mail is trying to play the victim as like most newspapers their circulation is falling. I rarely buy a paper these days and I suspect that goes for a lot of people. As Corbyn proved at the last election the papers are no longer the dominant media for influencing people and social media is just as important. In the not too distant future I can see some well known papers going to the wall.

Sadly, newspapers in the UK is following the trend in the US. New York, the American city, has four dailies (Times, Daily News, Post, Journal), two of which are more national/international in their outlook. Los Angeles has one, Chicago, Boston and DC have 2 while cities like Philadelphia have 2 but they're both owned by the same company. The future of newspapers seems to be digital. The New York Daily News plans to end printed editions in the next year to 18 months while others throughout the country will follow suit.

I heard the other night that the only newspapers which are sold on 'Virgin Trains' are the ones which supported 'Remain'. One can always buy the 'Mail' at the railway station before boarding one of these trains !

Virgin are a private company and they aren't a monopoly or even near monopoly so I guess if they can stock what newspapers they want. It isn't the same situation that is occurring in silicon valley where conservatives voices don't get careers. For Virgin to do this isn't a positive thing, they have become involved in politics in relation to being a train service. I would have thought that a service for taking people from A to B should be apolitical if anything but it's their choice.....it seems that every company feels the need to politicise everything.
