We have seriously suffered lately with muddled strategies from Parish and co and no long term approach to squad management. The goalkeeper and striker situations speak for themselves. Two things are for absolute certain here, we will lose Zaha and Loftus Cheek for next season. The time to be thinking about that is the next window coming up here soon. We should at least try to bring in a skillful creative winger type, because let alone the fact that Zaha is going to get sold, he could get injured, and that leaves us incredibly thin all of a sudden going forward. Without Zaha we would really struggle, the guy is by far our most important player in terms of goals and points. We need to be thinking about next year a bit in the next window, not just the remainder of this season. I think we all feel that relegation is now much less of a concern, and with the new stadium plans, clearly the board are planning to still be in the league come next season. Lets act that way in January and give new signings a chance to bed down into the side and be properly integrated before we rely on them heavily for the next campaign when we could easily be without Zaha, RLC, Cabaye, and a few others. In addition lets cover ourselves if we get injuries to those same key players this year. Edited by Maine Eagle (19 Dec 2017 10.48am)

There could be a big change in type of players if Roy stays. Less wing play. No Benteke or target man type strikers. Less stars and more hard working team players that compliment each other and a system. That takes 2-3 windows as it would've done for Frank and Roy will have had 2 by then and 30 matches with us. I trust Roy to know what he's doing. I trust Freedman to know a good player when he sees one, but he doesn't have the contacts we'd like. Hopefully that'll see us through because otherwise it's quite amateur.

I get the feeling that us 'looking for a midfielder' is us doing what we should've done on left backs, strikers and keepers. We don't need a midfielder next week but it's obvious that need is creeping up on us so it's good to hear, even if we don't sign one in January.

No doubt but I think we all feel a bit more comfortable now than after breaking a 1920 something record for losses and no goals scored to start a campaign. Point is we should be going into this window backing ourselves to be in the league next year, and act accordingly. Frankly though what I want to see is that a leopard can actually change its spots, maybe with the help of some Scottish friends, and implement a cohesive long term plan for managing our squad. Its been a shambles for years, the amount of dead wood we have versus lack of depth in key areas is a joke.

As Willo has pointed out, we are far from being safe from relegation and we could be right back in the bottom three after the Christmas/New Year games. You can forget about the "new stadium plans" until something actually happens; the whole thing is so long-term that anything could happen and we've had infrastructure "plans" before that have come to nought. What we urgently need in the January window is at least one more striker and another keeper. Anything else will be a luxury and, I suspect, that money will be fairly tight as well. Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

Edited by bexleydave (19 Dec 2017 11.31am) Agree with the point on Zaha, but I disagree that we should be approaching urgency in January for a Keeper. Striker? Yes, but not a keeper. I don't believe the level of keeper needed, to improve upon what we have already, would be available. The best we can hope for is a loan move from someone playing second fiddle at a bigger club, but even then why would the other club let them go at the halfway point. I think we should get a striker in during January and wait until the Summer for a new keeper. The same reasons above may well apply to strikers at this time of year, but I believe that more on-field players would be available and you could take a risk on a 2nd striker to back up Benteke from Europe.

Fully understand and agree SP needs to plan an awful lot better than in the past. I am not so sure we will lose Wilf, he loves being with us and the fans love him. He is getting paid well I would imagine so its just down to how he sees his future. If we get relegated then this will not apply I'm sure.

At the start of the season, we were nearly set up for a formation and style we will likely never play again, we got good backup for that style and if we had stuck by it we would have only been a bit shallow in a couple of positions.

I think Parish and co have already recognised our shortcomings in previous transfer dealings. That is why they appointed Dougie as director of football last summer. He was only appointed a week before that summer window closed so would of had little impact but this January we should be better prepared. I expect Parish, Dougie and Roy already have their targets and strategy planned.
