Anyone ever given it a go? Is it a good, compelling page turner? Or a long winter siege of a read? Its next on my list, reason I ask.

I read it many years ago and, like War & Peace, is a great book as far as I'm concerned. It's very much of it's time in terms of the situation Anna finds herself in. As you'd expect from Tolstoy there's some fine writing and the end is very atmospheric.

I read that somewhere amdist the story there's a 47 page description of Anna shearing wheat - reading the book may feel like eating 47 shredded wheat

I prefer this to War in Peace, but both are great works of art. Amusing anecdote, Tolstoy was oft criticised for the length of War and Peace, when Anna Karenina was published, the same critics picked on its shorter length...

it's all a matter of personal taste at the end of the day, as footballers would say, many a classic I have found to be turgid drivel, and many no doubt many classic people find me turgid and drivelsome, what the hey. Only read two Russian epics - Crime and Punishment, big thumps up, Dr Zhivago, refer to previous remarks, got through 40 pages of the Master and Margerita a while back but was not in the right frame of mind cos it's a bit of a mad book and I was not at my highest ebb at the time, it's more contemporary, and I'm not being weird, but Jonathan Meades, a broadcaster whom I genuinely admire, reckons Lolita is a supreme work. Will try it in the not too distant.

Never tried any of those Bronte, Austen, Elliots, tried and failed with Emile Zola, and Thomas Mann, and Kafka (the trial - i'm told the castle is wonderful). Couldn't put The Godfather down, and the first novel I actually enjoyed was The Collector by John Fowles, a book which has turned many a non-reader into a reader, for a short time.

Catch-22 is an odd one - Its just too long. What is really funny and erudite, kind of loses its 'sparkle' as it goes on. I felt the same with the Wasp Factory, but I read the Crow Road first - and I think that is arguably Iain Bank's best fiction novel.

It is amazing how Tolstoy got it onto Audible before his death.
