I am completely anti-trump, but have stayed pretty much quiet over it outside of my home because it really serves no purpose to argue with people over it. But this decision of his over Jerusalem is absolutely absurd. Regardless of the right of who should have Jerusalem etc, what on earth is in it for the US to recognize it as such ? Only pain and blood can come of it for the US. Has Israel offered Trump the rights to build a giant hotel in the holy city ? in return for this ? one can only wonder. This guy just keeps blowing my mind, just when you think he cant do anything more stupid, he goes and surprises you.

Just googled the story and yep Trump says US will recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Many of the things he says are inflammatory and this is another one of those occasions.

This is a column from the Washington Post syndicated columnist Richard Cohen (it ran today in today's NY Daily News). I believe it accurately reflects how a great many Jews in the US, including me, are feeling about the policies of the Netanyahu Government. However, there is a particularly loud group, to which Alan Dershowitz seems to be a leading spokesman, that claims criticism of Israel is anti-semitism. If that is the case, hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens are anti-semitic because they disapprove of their government's policies. For me, we have to separate the faith from the political policies of a government. It is becoming increasingly hard to explain to my friends that I believe a Jewish homeland is essential and must continue to exist but a Jewish State which uses the religion to justify whatever it does in the name of national security is bound to create massive problems. That is why Theodor Herzl, the founder of "modern" Zionism, said the Jewish Homeland should have no established religion.

A lot of people think it's the right thing to do as it's the genuine capital. Jerusalem is mentioned hundreds of times in the prophets and writings and not once in the Koran. Both the Senate and House overwhelmingly passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995 to move the embassy from Tel Aviv and recognise Jerusalem as the capital, so Trump is just implementing this. It also sends a message that Israel and US won't be threatened by violence from Hamas. Edited by Penge Eagle (06 Dec 2017 4.27am)

Surely such a move would greatly increase the threat to innocent civilians pretty much everywhere, whilst creating new opportunities for the sales of security/ military equipment and for the increased erosion of civil liberties? Either that or its plain old lusting for power and wealth in backhanders.

Edited by Penge Eagle (06 Dec 2017 4.27am) I think it certainly increases the threat to the US from Hamas (who are the elected government of the Palestinian Authority, unfortunately) - and likely will escalate the conflict in the area. I think there is a reason why the 1995 agreement never ended up with the US recognising Jerusalem as the capital.

The locals managed Jerusalem quite nicely for 800 years until Israel's continuing illegal forceful occupation of it since 1967. Trump is basically giving the thumbs-up to a criminal act and a massive killer slap in the face to the two-state proposal.
