I think the term social mobility is mislabeling an issue. Just heard a discussion on LBC. John Bird who started the Big Issue felt it was all about poor quality education limiting the choices of some people. You don't have a choice to work on a building site or in an office if you don't have qualifications. So for social mobility read better quality education / training. That I agree is a barrier for people to succeed and I am all in favour of doing more. More apprenticeship schemes like Germany with proper qualifications e.g. plumbers, electricians. My friends consider me rich middle class (I don''t) but I grew up on a council estate and my dad worked on building sites and my mum was a cleaner. I had a good career because I worked hard at school and then at work. The only barriers I faced were the same as any toff. Was I good enough to do the job. In other words a meritocracy. We have poverty in this country and sink estates I don''t believe we have social barriers where it counts. So give a kid a good education and the doors will open. PS
