Often a lifesaver for women escaping domestic violence. At the moment they can pay using housing benefit. That's about to change.

Aside from journalistic licence, the story told here is pretty harrowing.

Apparently 2 women a week are murdered by their partner / ex partner.

Why is it always the most vulnerable that seem to be hardest hit by 'savings'?

I spent a lot of time in the park Lane one in Croydon mid 70s, I assumed it was voluntary run back then. An interesting place to grow up when you’re 7

My wife and I work in support of the Houston Area Women's Center. [Link]

They have a main office, where I have been, but only my wife has been able to tour their secure compound - such is the protection that these women need. Their abusers will try to intercept them at work or at their kids' school, so they often need a security detail just to carry on some semblance of a normal life. Hence the very strict security arrangements around the shelter.

A lot is made of the frequency of gun murders in the US - quite rightly. What's rarely highlighted in the figures is that abused women make up a strikingly disproportionate number of the victims. The likelihood of a women being murdered increases 8-fold if there's a gun in the house. [Link]

When these women run, they need to effectively disappear. When they run with their kids, they show up at HAWC with literally their clothes on their backs and nothing else. When we have put on events for HAWC, in addition to money to fund the shelter, we ask for things that the fleeing women need which includes things like baby formula, diapers, toothbrushes, underwear... it's heartbreaking.

NG never used the word "cut". Rather,savings...

Withdrawal housing benefit=less funds for "rent" to cover costs of the refuge=savings=refuges unable to remain open. There you go

If you feel that you have nothing to contribute or say, then don't post. Otherwise it looks like you're attacking the poster, not the subject. If you're bored of politics then try the new general talk.

And you can contribute something substantial to say its not true? This isn't general talk anymore.

The Guardian is a socialist paper and prints lots of tosh which is designed to be anti Tory.
There is no response from the government in the article so it is a one sided argument.
Anyone can make one of those.

Is the new politics thread just going to be a place where people can transparently campaign for the Labour party by constantly linking anti govrnment articles on a daily basis?

I thought it was meant to be about discussion.

Which is why just posting a single word isn't a discussion.

The Guardian is Socialist? Its left leaning, but I'd hardly call it socialist, anymore than the Daily Mail is fascist. All news papers should be printing articles that are critical of the government (Notably the Guardian did this with Tony Blair as well).

What I'm interested in, is the shelters and the rate of death from domestic violence. That concerns me far more than what people think of a newspaper.

Left leaning, socialist. That's just juggling definitions.
Fact is, the piece is biased and unbalanced which is what was intended.
Do I believe that the government wants to see women die at the hands of their spouses? Unlikely.
Do I believe that left wingers want it to look that way ? Without doubt.
