Law just passed in Scotland to have minimum prices on Alcohol according to units. Personally don't have much time for this as I think detterants are often used as an excuse to make more money, if someone has a problem with alcohol or addiction in any form, making the source more expensive will only make them poorer. The cycle of such example can only be a counter productive one. However I do think it shines the light on the perceptions of alcohol and the fact that essentially it is a drug. It's quite ironic that this is such a perverse concept to some yet legalising a substance such as cannabis is considered as crazy to the same people. Edited by Mstrobez (15 Nov 2017 6.24pm)

If someone is buying lots, just drive to Berwick on Tweed or Carlisle (over the border) and get it cheap with all the offers. If they ever do it in England, it will just resurrect all the booze cruises to Calais! All this does is make life even harder for alcoholics, their diet will worsen as they spend even more on booze

Ridiculous and ill-considered (Scottish) government interference. What next; minimum pricing on chips?

I think a large proportion of smokers give up because of the cost. Saying that though alcohol is generally more expensive than in Europe and we have a big drinking culture here

So if you have money you can continue to get smashed. But if you are poor....the government says 'fcuk you'. I instinctively dislike that.

The poorer members of British society don't seem to take any notice of health warnings which is one of the reasons that we are the fattest nation in Western Europe. I think that minimum pricing is a good idea and I would like to see a large sugar tax imposed on anything with excess sugar in it too

It's artificially restricting the choice of the individual because they have less money. This is taking yet another thing away from them and patting them on the head telling them how they should live their lives. While those with more money aren't seriously affected.
