Nice.

Scotty Dann was always one that i felt was unfairly over looked.

At the peak of his powers I thought he would be a better choice than Smalling or Cahill, who mostly only looked good - Smalling especially - because they were playing behind teams that attacked well and whose forwards kept the pressure off their defence. Dann was at the centre of a machine that kept decent attacks out for whole games under constant pressure, until Chateau Pardew began to collapse.

Whilst I recognised Dann's positive contribution for our team I was never a flag-bearer for Dann playing for England. Nor was I for Ward when some on here were advocating an England call-up.

You've left out Puncheon whom many with the Palace tinted glasses thought was worthy of an England place

There is no big club bias as it's just a mixture of the larger clubs having the financial muscle to buy up the best players plus the fans of smaller clubs thinking that their players are better than they really are.

I don't have a recollection of me taking an alternative view of Puncheon on HOL but I have never believed he was worthy of a call-up.Perhaps I did mention my views on HOL !!!!!

The problem with Dann is at his best he was always in a Palace team that defended deep and fairly compactly and didn't really look to retain possession. If I was Hodgson at time time I would have been hesitant to trust him in a high line and when being pressed to not hoof it.

So explain:
Lingard over Zaha?
Phil Jones over Dann?
Lingard over Townsend this time round?
Gomez over Lascelles?
How long it took Defoe to get a look in?
Jack Wilshere and Sturridge used to seemingly always getting in and amongst the squad.
How Drinkwater wasn't in the squad the season they won the league.

I think you are right, you'll always get a higher percentage of players from big clubs, but there is a clear bias.

Of the current selected squad:
6 (not including loans) come from outside the top 6. Half of them are 'keepers (Joe Hart, Butland and Pickford), baring in mind that no top 6 team has an English goalkeeper. The other three are Vardy, Maguire and Bertrand. Again, Vardy is an established forward and prolific last couple seasons and this, we have piss all left backs and Maguire.

I suppose that Gomez has that versatility having played in central defence and in both full-back positions.Rodgers started him off at Liverpool as a left-back but at Charlton he was playing at right-back before his transfer to Anfield.

It has been thought for the last couple of years that his future was at centre-half and had been labelled "The next Rio Ferdinand".Certainly composed at the back not diving into reckless challenges and he is an intelligent player with pace.

I'm a firm believer that there is a big club bias but think its likely driven by financial reasons. Marketing and sponsorship etc is far easier a sell when you have players from Man U etc as opposed to Palace, Burnley etc. What worries me more is Joe Hart constantly being picked when he's useless... except against us.

Zaha cannot now be selected for England, his choice
Jones has played in a defence that have conceded 4 goals, Dann 21 goals. Jones has raised his game this year.
Gomez is more versatile, but close shout.
Not so long ago Jake Livermore was in the team, so there is no big club bias, unless you class boring WBA as a big team.
Playing for England is no longer important to many players, England have to play to a system as dictated by Dan Ashworth.
