Some different looks at analytics, one offers hope - the other doom and gloom.

Still feel like we will turn it around, as long as we stay within single digits of 17th, really feel like we have a chance to get a point vs Chelsea.

Maybe we could start playing like Burnley. 8 points from 4 away games at Chelsea, Spuds, Liverpool and Everton.

But wait a minute; is that the same Burnley that we - under FdB - outplayed and should have buried but for a lack of any striking ability?

So the stats say depending on which angle you look at it we will either survive or get relegated. However us fans know that our season will be defined after the Chelsea game. If we go on to score goals and pick up points we will have a chance. If we carry on our failure to score and failure to pick up points then we know we will have no chance of surviving. So whatever the stats may or may not indicate us fans know what the real situation is. COYP

Not really, I've read both prior to today; the BBC one is highly unpredictable... They put these types of things out all the time, and they are rarely right. Iirc they did one when we looked dead and buried last season, and low and behold we stayed up.

The first one is looking more at the performances we are putting in. Basically, what he was saying is that our performances (based on things like shots conceded, shots created, xG etc.), compared to the average (over many PL seasons), haven't been as bad as the scorelines suggest.

Why does that matter? Generally everything regresses back to the average, and we are way below that. In theory, if we keep playing the way we are, then we should see an upturn in form.

Don't need 40 points. 34, 35 possibly 36.

9 wins 8 draws 14 defeats from remaining games. 35 points. Job done.

Remember that magic number thing? Well as things stand currently we only need another 99 points to guarantee survival - shame we can only get 93 even if we win all of our remaining games. Thankfully that figure will continue to reduce as the season progresses and it's a totally meaningless stat at this stage. Just thought I'd share though.

You no more know that than anyone else does. This could just as easily be the season that 40+ points are needed to stay up. We are not yet in any position to be complacent about what's required. At the moment even 34 looks like climbing Everest equipped with only a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops.

We have 31 games to go and still have to play -
Chelsea twice
Spurs twice
Arsenal twice
Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool once
9 games almost certainly without points
Those games right now look like lost causes albeit things might change.
So you can put it that we need at least 36 points from 22 games - more than 1.5 per game from those - given what has happened so far "we have a problem Houston"!
