Illegal under EU law but the Liam Fox (how apt) hinted that deregulation post brexit will oil the wheels of a trade deal. Gove isn't happy about watering down environmental regulations. May has washed her hands of it all (with anti bacterial hand wash no doubt) American Holers, what does chlorine washed chicken taste like? What do others think. Are we letting standards slip? Will we undermine our own poultry business? Would you eat chlorine washed chicken?

I look forward to the day technology closes down the whole animal farming industry. Of course I'm being totally irresponsible about jobs and income but the day's not that far off already. As for the trade deal...I'm sure something will be sorted out. I want closer ties with the US personally.

The EU's own research shows it is safer as the process massively reduces salmonella compared with the European methods of cold water and air. I suspect that this is as much to do with preserving French farm practices as it does with actual people's health. My preference would be for clearer labeling, so we could all make informed choices. Mind you that would put costs up, and that would mean food price rises. Fine for me, not great for the less well off.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

It's also been shown that overall levels of hygiene drop amongst companies that rely on the method. In regards to labelling, they will sell it without telling you what it is. Who would buy imported chicken with "genetically engineered, chlorine washed" written on it. Not me. So they will try and get you to eat it without you knowing what it is. That's how they sell so much crap food in the states and use price to justify selling it to the less well off. In addition, many states ban people from growing their own food, using food hygiene as an excuse.

In the early days in fact for a very long time all the chicken we put through the factory was washed in chlorinated water when it went through the water chillers. Our site killed 50,000 chickens a day in the early days, so a lot of bleach was used.

"It is more than one-fifth cheaper than British chicken, and has been deemed safe by the European Food Safety Authority, despite the EU ban." I say we should have it on the shelves, explain on the label, and let people have the choice! Another example of leaving the EU bringing down prices for families.

If they put it on the label and people can make an informed choice, fine but they won't. Personally, I just want fresh chicken, that is home grown and not from the other side of the world, that has not been factory farmed, genetically engineered or washed in chemicals, so someone can make a fast buck.

Shame all the examples so far are price increases for families.

I'm just off to the swimming pool for my weekly chlorine wash by the way. Edited by hedgehog50 (25 Jul 2017 8.09am)

It's not that simple as one of the largest markets in the UK for chicken is in ready meals and the label will just say "Chicken Tikka" or similar and people don't read the small print on the labels now to see what type of chicken is in the meal so they certainly won't in the future. In addition to American chicken they also stuff their beef cows full of growth hormones too which is something else that I'm not too keen on
