I find it slightly depressing that buying seems to be the only way looked at by many to improve a premiership team, and the demands by many fans that we need to buy players x, y & x, and make wholesale changes every transfer window. Our managers should be top coaches, who improve both the individual and team abilities of the players we have (which becomes more challenging, but not impossible, as players get older). It means a little more patience is required by both owners and supporters, but in the long run the club should be better for it, developing our own players and driving the club forwards in a cost effective manner. That's not to say we shouldn't buy to strengthen, but first the club needs to look at what it has and see if it can improve from within. Otherwise the only way of competing is to spend more than those around you. It does mean our youth and player development set-up must be good enough to find and bring on players of a suitable quality, if it isn't then the scouting and coaching staff at that level needs to be looked at and prioritised.

We have a very good academy and we have some top class coaches at the club. Some say Sammy Lee is amongst the best there is. Problem is everyone in the Premiership has these resources to call upon. Having a good youth set up is not exclusive. Plus we don't have the financial clout to hoover up talent that is outside our area (and then pay the parents relocation costs so it looks to be within the rules) Its an arms race and some have more money than us. You talk about patience but no one will be patient (including yourself I suspect) if the club decided to stop spending money, go with youth and see us fall out of the division. It has to be done in a structured sensible way.

Isn't the signing of our new manager wholly addressing your main concern. I.e. Youth development... surely there's not a better appointment possible than FdB in wanting to promt youth and kick the academy in to shape.
I think the appointment is transformational for the success of the development side of our club.
Everything I've seen so far confirms that.
Yes we still need to sign players but if anyone is going to give the kids a crack it'll be FdB.
Confused the OP not being able to see this.
