The Queen of Europe, Angela Merkel. Just voted against legalising same sex marriages in Germany. The vote still passed which allows the same sex to marry. She said her reason was because only a man and woman should marry. This was after voting against allowing same sex couples to adopt. I hope those that were hurling abuse to the DUP, will also do the same to her. I doubt it though. Edited by Hansy (30 Jun 2017 1.16pm)

The DUP probably agree with her, but people were quick to rip them off because of their views. It will be interesting to see how they think of Merkel. The decision should be with those that want to enter a same sex marriage, not someone without any experience on the matter. A vote for yes was for change, and creates an equal community for the LGBT Edited by Hansy (30 Jun 2017 1.16pm)

I disagree with her stance and find it sad that the leader of the biggest European economy has these neolithic beliefs, but am glad she allowed parliament a free vote on it, unlike the DUP's stance on pretty much all social freedoms which don't fit with their narrow minded beliefs. Given Merkel is head of the Christian Democrats it's hardly that surprising that she is personally against marriage equality, but it's still sad. Thankfully she is also mindful of the "Democrat" aspect of her party, unlike the DUP. They should really be the Authoritarian Unionist Party.

ThE DUP are of the thought that being gay is “immoral, offensive and obnoxious” (Ian Paisley jr) which is a lot different to someone saying marriage is for a man and a woman. If she is a Christian then she couldn't really vote for it but at least she hasn't said the above.

No defence for the DUP, as I think their view is wrong. But I haven't thrown abuse their way. Merkel also said marriage should be for a man and a woman. She had to put forward the vote, as the coalition party threatened to not join forces in future. Kermit, you are taking what a Junior Minister has said, and son of the late Ian Paisley who was a priest. It is still wrong, but hardly on behalf of the DUP. Edited by Hansy (30 Jun 2017 1.51pm)

Every citizen, should have the same legal rights as every other citizen.

Irish Politics is f**king absurdly stupid these days - Its a lot of old school Troubles warriors trying to legitimise their existence, such as the absurdity of the argument over Gaelic that's one of the issues at the core of Stormont being closed. Two increasingly irrelevant political parties that have to hold on to fear, hate and prejudice in order to remain relevant. I've no doubt that both Sinn Fein and the DUP are also protected by the nutbar factions that were the PIRA and UVF etc from politicians and political parties that actually have relevance to the modern world. Thanks for that. Shows a different culture up in Northern Ireland. People are still voting for them, so the public must have similar views also. Ireland now has a homosexual President so hopefully the view in that area will change now.

The thing is, if the public were not interested they wouldn't vote for them. But the country is still very split in terms of being part of the UK and being part of Ireland. The politicians there will continue this until they are being run from Westminster or united with Ireland
