Very candid interview, opening up about mental health and addiction. Although sad it makes me think when we were supposedly looking to sign him our board knew about what looks like an open secret in the football community.

Excellent read.

Truly talented. A lot many can relate too.

If he is clean and he is near the top of fitness, I would give him a go.

No worries Alan, I think this subject is a little more relevant than the rugby player wanting to make people look like homophobes in another thread.

Being a bit bat sh*t crazy myself I empathise with his feelings and the whole struggling to hold down your job, your family, be a success whilst battling demons.

He always looked like a proper player but you could tell there was something that wasn't making him fulfill his potential.

It is a great article and hopefully speaking openly about his issues may help him overcome them.

Mental health is a serious issue and support needs to be out there for anyone, from any walk of life that suffers.

Exactly mate. It doesn't matter how much you earn to kick a ball, if you're not wired up right, no matter how cool your job is or how much you earn you struggle.

I've got myself a cracking job in the last year, a lot more stress though. I split for my missus recently because the work strain for the extra pounds meant home life was fraught. Not afraid to admit it. At least I didn't have 20,000 people booing me for being sh*t.

This. The only problem with stories like this, is that people only really seem to be interested in mental health when its someone of status - and these tend to be the more positive / less severe issues (and they're bad enough).

I remember a girl at school who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 14, and a few people I met through my own experiences, who were never going to be in a position where they could be talking about getting their life back on track, putting it all behind them.

Like Caulker I suffer from Clinic Depression, have had problems with addiction, and the related problems that go with it. But we are at the lucky end of the mental health spectrum, that are overlooked. They're not going to get better with some rehab and therapy, by taking a 12 step program etc.

Sometimes I worry that we only look at the 'good stories' of mental illness.
