A friend of mine's mother in her late 60's and with limited IT skills has just had her bank account completely emptied by some complete cnuts. A man rang claiming to be from the cooperative bank telling her that there had been fraudulent activity on her business account. She checked the telephone number which appeared on her mobile and it was the genuine number for the coop bank however they managed it. Account number and sort code is on her website so clients can pay her. Don't know the exact details but apparently the guy was extremely convincing and was able to reference several recent transactions that she'd made and while she didn't give him her pin she did give him a number from her card reader and £30,000 has gone up in smoke. She's left it with the co op bank fraud department overnight who are looking into it and are uncertain if she'll be able to recover it. Does anyone know if she will? Apparently she's in one hell of a state.

Banks do often return the money straight away and then investigate, I work for a bank and I think that's a basic banking requirement. From less serious fraud that I have experienced, it's always gone quiet afterwards and I've assumed they've caught the perp and just not been able to advise me. Not had to chase up as my money was returned right away. No experience in the specific scenario you've mentioned, but you'd hope it'd be the same just on a larger scale. Fingers crossed.

Thanks chief. Just slightly concerned that they tricked her into revealing her card reader details which might mean she's in trouble from the sound of things. Money went into a Barclays account and seemingly the Coop bank are pretty pissed off that Barclays didn't block it.

On that basis this one might hinge a bit more on catching the baddy. But not necessarily.... And if Barclays fraud detection was poor then Co-Op might be able to be a bit more than just pissed off with them. I am guessing a bit now though as it's not a scenario I've seen play out in real life before. Let us know how you get on.

Im fed up with everything card related, you take a chance going into a petrol station paying by card, the guys uised to skim them and you could end up out of pocket, not sure if theyve tightened up on that one, i only pay for a holiday by card, dont order online and firmly believe that cash is king!

cash is king! Yeah until you end up with some of the very many fake notes around. At least with a card you can get the money back from the provider in the very rare situation a fake transaction has taken place. I've never had any issues with using cards for years plus you also get cover for anything that isn't as advertised when buying online using a card. No brainer.

Sadly this is an old scam, has been doing the rounds in surrey / sussex. They seem to target the elderly as they tend to be easier to convince. No bank will ever ask for a PIN number. Another version of this scam is having a call from the police saying they have caught someone with your card and can you confirm your details.
Sometimes I set out for Ludlow |

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |
