Hello everyone, my name is Gareth Thomas and I'm a former rugby player, wrong shape ball joke there for you! Being gay myself (hope you don't think I'm going on about it there), I'm really interested in reading some of your opinions on the issue of chanting and what some people consider homophobic language; what do people think is the line between abuse and banter when it comes to football chants? I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, but should also be brave enough to defend their opinions when challenged.. On that note, I'd really like to invite some of you to meet and exchange opinions on this subject. I'm making a documentary for the BBC and feel it's important to include a range of opinions and fan bases. Let me know what you think on this subject, (not on me..I come in peace!)Gareth Thomas.

Personally I think if anyone is going to get offended by a chant or takes anything personally football matches are not the place for them! Too much of a nanny state nowadays watching what you say!! Fattest, sexist, racist, homophobic its all gone to far. Pathetic. I sing what I want and if anyone gets offended they should do one

You're the second person to come on here and say this. Multiple user IDs? I suspect to an outsider the comments on this forum may often appear to cross some kind of imaginary boundary and for that reason may have drawn your attention. Whilst a short trawl round the whole forum on a variety of subjects will demonstrate most people on here make tongue in cheek comments about everything. Personally I find a lot of football chanting offensive. At the Burnley games they were singing about "staying up" but I've not had an erection since June 2004.

Although she's brown bread now so my argument falls apart a bit.

That's uncanny - I HAVE had an erection since 2004!

I don't think there's any room for it in this day and age. In 10/15 years time it will be viewed in the same way as racist chanting. There are undoubtedly many people watching the games who are struggling with their identities and to hear songs that make them suppress that is wrong. It's statistically likely that there is a member of our squad or backroom staff who is gay, as fans we shouldn't be insulting our own players and their lifestyle choices. When a player does come out then I think it will curb it even further. This has obviously all come about because of Brighton going up, but from a Palace point of view why would that need to be an insult. We've had far more success than them. I'll be singing about that.
"Brighton are talking about how they're coming for us. And it's like, we've been waiting in the Premier League for you for ages." Wilfried Zaha, 2017. |
