Despite Newcastle getting promoted last night, I was extremely disappointed to see how little their fans seemed to care until they were halfway through the match. I mean, they didn't even start singing until they were 3-1 up at a PROMOTION DECIDER! And so many fans I've seen are saying it's because "they should be so much higher than this" and "it's nothing compared to what they're used to." And we all know clubs like West Ham and Charlton are and were exactly the same.

This got me thinking - is that gonna be us one day?

Now, hear me out. Say we do renovate Selhurst to 35,000-40,000 and stay in the PL for five more years. Won't expectations be raised? Won't we be expected to be compete? Will we become so used to mid table obscurity that we get bored and start demanding better? I mean, we're already kind of starting to see that now with some fans wanting big names in the summer to push for Europe, when in my opinion we need a couple more years of stability after the rocky seasons we've had so far.

I'm fully aware that our fans are far better than the likes of the geordies and the hammers (and certainly the clowns!) and I don't want to try and slag us off by any means, but it is something that worries me. I for one don't want to see us become a club that expects and demands top eight, and finds anything less a disgrace.

Find yourself something really important to worry about. We're far too used to suspecting that a lump of disappointment is just around the next corner to have the sense of entitlement that Newcastle and West Ham supporters have.

Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing!

Why not, first and foremost it's a competitive sport, your expectations should be to be the best while being realistic at the same time. Bit different for smaller clubs but look at arsenal, do their board even see it as sport, no, all it is to them is a business. Atleast clubs like utd, Madrid, juve ect demand to win every competition they take part in and have a certain arrogance about them.

Newcastle Fans are no less "entitled" and w$nkerish than the fans of most clubs with big stadia....which I guess supports the OP's point.

At the moment, I would exclude Everton and the 25000 or so Sunderland hardcore who have stood by their awful side this season from that sweeping generalisation.

Can I be the first to congratulate you on some faultless spelling and punctuation? Really well done.

Thanks. I'm WAY too anal about it for my own good!

Good point. I'm not exactly having sleepless nights, but it is something that's been bugging me a little is all.

Wet Spam fans have been to**pots since before they were in the Premiership and certainly before they got their "big new stadium" thing.

Why does mid table have to be coupled with "obscurity"

If we are mid table that means that we have won quite a few matches and isn't that what supporters are supposed to want

In the olden days pretty much every club at the start of the season could not predict where they would end up in the table. In the two decades pre-sky Arsenal, Leeds, Derby, Forest, Villa, Everton, Liverpool all won titles with QPR, Ipswich, Man City, Southampton and West Ham only a point or two away from doing it themselves. 12 different teams as genuine title contenders going into the late Aprils/May. Notice no Man U

And at the other end there was the initial not knowing of who would be 'relegation fodder'?

All made for heaps of unpredictability and it was being part of that which made promotion so exciting and joyous.

Newcastle fans already know they will almost certainly come somewhere between 9th and 17th - and so do we - and the top 6 know that they will be the top six next season too. It is more boring than it was now for sure so 'yes' promotion has been diluted somewhat.

I'm quite happy to stay in the prem and endeavour to improve each season.
Gradually year on year moving up to the Top 6.
With some ground improvements.
However as palace Fans we are expecting for something to go wrong.
EG Pulis going.
So hopefully we keep Sam's team happy, the players stay and this is the start of the Team of the 2018's !!!!!!

IMO there is quite a gulf between PL relegation sides like Hull, Swansea and Burnley all good teams and those promoted from the Championship.

I think Brighton Newcastle and whoever else will find the going tough next year they will need to enter the transfer market where it seems you have to pay 10 millions for only a good player nothing special.

Gayle Murray etc. having a feast in the Championship
which is a good entertaining division there is no such thing as a routine 2-0 in the PL though.

Good luck to them anyway.
