The US launches missiles at Assad regime targets following the gassing of innocent citizens: This regime has to be brought down. Good on Trump for doing something Obama should have done years ago.

The same Trump as this fellow? Nah. Can't be. That would make the President a total hypocrite.

Irrespective of who is actually guilty of these war crimes, I for one am happy to have given Russia cause to give second thoughts in the event of them thinking of an excursion into the Baltic states.

Completely agree and clearly evidencing UK Govt foreign policy hypocrisy. I don't recall May; Fallon etc criticising Obama's reluctance to engage in military strike when Assad had crossed the previously stated 'red line'...

It is good that that Trump has done something to counteract the eight years of inaction and appeasement under the weak government of Obama.

Far too quick to apportion blame here without a proper investigation. I remain sceptical; after all, ISIS (whom this action now strengthens) would never consider committing atrocities if it meant furthering their cause, right? Just consider the pretext to this: ISIS are getting hammered in Iraq, and have all but lost Mosul Assad is winning the war in Syria He (supposedly) relinquished his chemical weapons back in 2013 The US last week stated they would no longer seek to oust him from power This week he nerve-gasses (almost exclusively, as far I can tell) women and children. With full knowledge this event would spread like wildfire and draw international condemnation. The US now says he has to go. Sorry, but I find this more than a little fishy. Could ISIS/"rebels" have deployed chemical weapons without airpower? I don't know. A proper investigation should have been taken, rather than the US wading in. Was a proper investigation conducted? No idea, but the timescale suggests otherwise. One thing's for sure, Syrians lose. ISIS wins. I have absolutely no horse in this race, other than to state that that international community could contain and engage with Assad better than they could ISIS. Better the devil you know.

I agree that it is difficult to see why Assad would order such an attack in the current situation. However, everyone apart from Assad are saying that it was the government. It is probable that the USA has informants within the Syrian apparatus who would confirm it on way or another. I know Trump does not come across as the most thoughtful of leaders, but he would need more to go on than assumption before launching the response attack.

He'll have asked this season's Alastair "45 minutes" Campbell and Colin "UN Security Council" Powell. It's not like intel has ever been sexed up as a pretext to lighting the touchpaper in the ME.

We should re name this thread to "conspiracy nut jobs"
I think more likely this was an event orchestrated by the Kremlin, to antagonise the USA into a response, which they got, the Russian paid for and built by Air Base was pummelled into next week rendering it useless as an airfield (59 Cruise missiles will do that). In turn (of course) Russia has now rescinded it's agreement to not engage in hostilities with American military personnel. IMO It's a tester to see if USA will Step in to stop Putin (original nutter) invading the Balkan States, not forgetting that we now have 800 or so troops in Estonia already. But what worries me is that it is trump and Putin moving the chess pieces around, two ego's that know no limits. Still at least it will keep me in a job for a while. So every (hopefully not mushroom) cloud and all that.

Slightly early for these comments let their be an investigation. Although the Russian explanation is unlikely there have been accounts of Islamist rebels using chlorine and blaming the Government, Sarin would be the next step. As a supporter of the Jewish ultra right, what type of Government would you want in Syria?
