Hounded Out - Wimbledon Dog Track Closes....

Last night Wimbledon Dog Track closed it's doors after the last ever dog race there @ 10.30pm.

That means there are now no dog tracks left at all in London... at the height of popularity there were 30 dog tracks with London postcodes... now there are none.

The track will be demolished and replace by a new home for AFC Wimbledon and a load of housing.

89 years of history!

As many of you know... the welfare of racing greyhounds is a topic dear to my heart and this latest set back will probably endanger the lives of about 500 dogs that were racing at Wimbledon, together with the livelihood of Trainers and kennel staff etc associated with the business of racing dogs.

I will continue to do my bit to help the charities that rehome these beautiful dogs (that actually make fantastic pets) and I will remind you all again where to get information about rehoming them and/or donating to the cause....

I find it all very sad.... I first visited Wimbledon dog track in 1959 and also saw Speedway Racing and Banger Racing there.... good times.

Whilst I have no interest in greyhound racing - or really in dogs themselves - I do have sympathy for the plight of the dogs once there racing days are over. No animal deserves to be treated as many of these are.

I've seen it first hand with my own greyhound Rob....

I bought a dog to race in 1995 called Smokey Racc00n... lovely big fella (see picture below)

He broke his back leg in a race and the trainer said to me "shall I have him put down for you?"

I reminded him that a broken leg was not fatal and the dog was only 3 years old and had run his heart out for me.

I had that dog living at home with us till he died aged 14 years.... what a beautiful loyal companion he was too!

don't agree with dog racing... the dogs are treated badly and after their career is over they are treated even worse unless they are fortunate enough to find someone to care for them.

I've already explained about that above.... but you've ignored it.

How can you be "glad" to see 500 more greyhounds en masse potentially condemned to be put down in the next few weeks?

You could take a positive view and join me and others to educate people and help get these dogs rehomed.

Ignoring the dogs welfare, the closure of the track will put a load of people out of work as well.

I didn't read the entire post, just the first few lines. You sound like a fella who does care about dogs I'm glad the dogs will not be racing anymore and obviously i wouldn't want any of the dogs to be put down. I also would hope that all the people working there would find new jobs. Funny thing was after I read my original comment back I edited it cos I didn't think it was worded correctly and didn't sound right. Anyways, like I say, you sound like a good fella and I agree with you about educating people and trying to find the dogs new homes and if there's a way I can help in finding homes or educate people just post a link or pm me.

Went to the dogs at Wimbledon a lot with the old man.

At least dogs are not going to be bred for a life of misery now.
