Can't bring myself to say RIP as who knows how many deaths he will have been responsible for. Can't deny the role he's played in bringing more peace to Northern Ireland though and for that he deserves some credit.

The BBC this morning have barely mentioned the fact he was a Brigade Commander in the IRA.

As Harry said he deserves some credit for the peace process but let's not forget those that were murdered in cold blood.

I will wait for the usual, you're a Brit you know f*** all type posts

At last. Just a pity that:

a) It took so long
b) He didn't suffer for much longer.

Let's hope that the other murdering cnut Adams isn't far behind.

As a teenager in the 80s I used to live in fear of the IRA.
They seemed to dominate the news.
I would sometimes check under my dad's car for a bomb like I'd seen them do on the news.
That and waiting for the 4 minute warning they were scary times.

However the other day I was reading something on Wikipedia and it eventually linked to Bobby Sands - the IRA Hunger Striker. When you read about his upbringing - getting bottles thrown at him walking to school and whole families attacked for being Catholics in Northern Ireland it did give me a new perspective as to why these people did hate the Protestants and the English so much.

None of it is right and there were truly shocking crimes on both sides but if you're day starts by walking to school and getting bricks and bottles thrown at you can understand the pure hatred.

I'm no sympathiser and the attacks on the British Mainland were atrocious and sick but what an absolutely awful place Northern Ireland was to live in back in the 60s-80s. Strange to think it is only a relatively short time ago.

Perhaps it depends on what you're listening to? Radio 4 have just been discussing his reputation as the 'Butcher of Bogside'.

Controversial figure, I suspect among republicans and nationalist in Ireland he's something of a hero. But in truth, he's just another killer in the guise of a 'just cause', in a complicated time, where violence was the primary language of both sides.
