I have been there 5 times and love it.

Their telly is the s***est in the world because their outdoors is the best in the world. Fantastic quality of restaurants & wine to easily compete with Europes best. The beaches, oh! the beaches and the surf ... etc.

BUT! The Aussies themselves. When I am there I find I just dont gel with the natives and get drawn to the ex-pats.

My sister has married one (moved from Newcastle UK to Newcastle down under!)

Lots of Aussie based contributors on here so tell me - are they a bunch of sport obsessed fascists or what ?

When they kick out your front door. How you gonna come ?

Met loads of Aussies backpacking in Europe in the late 80's thru' to the early 90's and gotta say I thought they were generally fantastic. Great company and just so not superficial. Bloody refreshing it was. Managed to bag an Aussie chick for a whole two years whilst I was at it. Great days.

Ive spent quite some time over there too, totally agree, its a great place, I can imagine it would be good to bring up a family there, great outdoor life, good weather, fresh food, beaches, good standard of life.

One thing that really strikes me about Aussies is how confident they are. They are also ultra competitive in the work place and on the sports field. The women are not backwards in coming forward either😉

Quite a macho culture, they have a high amount of male suicides.

Words from an Aussie Eagle !
We actually like you guys, the banter between both countries and culture is the opportunity to take the $iss but I have always embraced the English as friends and always will ( except I have to admit I do struggle generally with people from Manchester !)
Our cultures ( although Kerms disagrees) is pretty aligned, we love a laugh and a good old yarn and if there is banter to be had you will get it all in good spirits.
Yes we are a competitive lot and enjoy a good fight, but shake hands and have a beer after a game with our opponents.
If the thread is aimed at the whinging Indians in the cricket, then you are probably right in saying that we may turn things up a notch against those guys, particularly over there on their home decks.

We are the lucky ones, with beautiful weather, beaches etc and well our women are pretty good too ! The English are always welcome here and in 99.9% of cases you will always find a friend here, and a fellah to share a beer or 12 !
We need more Palace fans here though so get over here.

Didn't mean the people Clevander was thinking more about aesthetics. Buildings, etc. And that Sydney suburb sprawl - wtf?

Some insanely dangerous and poisonous creatures, though.

A bit like Cardiff on a Saturday night.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Generalising...Its a great place...good people...doesn't have our class system...if you are in Sydney (the place I know best) lashings of "culture" of all types (and aesthetically re design/buildings, the harbour with the Opera House and the harbour bridge knocks the Thames for six,and check out some of the North Shore beach suburbs..versus South London)...lovely women who are not backwards at coming forwards...great food from immigrants from all over the place..some dodgy and boring people and places...just like here but without the frost in winter

To put some balance, generally in my experience Aussies like us too, once you realise being called a pommie b****** is a term of endearment!

My favourite Aussie joke about Poms is:Q:how do you know when the British Airways plane has landed at Sydney Airport?

A:The whining doesn't stop when they turn the engines off!

We are not the only ones who can do stereotyping that contains a kernel of truth!

NP Keems, yes Sydney is one hell of a sprawl and keeps getting bigger and bigger, I don't know how people can live so far from the city tbh, there are new suburbs springing up, it seems every couple of months, 100,000 people moving to Sydney every year will do that.... many Chinese!
Never heard the British airways joke in my 53 years of life so brought a little laugh there.... pommie b******s is certainly a term of endearment, unlike some references to other ethnic groups which have a little more teeth 😗
I agree with the comment above re some boring places and people, and the bogans / Bevan's or westies as we call them are the bottom of the food chain that are very stereotypical to a larger than what I would like % of the population... to frame and stereotype them you can pick them a mile away
Just look for mullet hair cuts, black t shirts, thongs and hotted up ( if they're not stolen lol) cars usually with a VB ( Victoria bitter), West End Draught, XXXX lager or Resches pilsner in their hand ! Oh, and a large number are usually visiting Centrelink ( social security) every week..... oh dear oh dear now I sound a little up my backside don't I !

I've been here for six years and love it. Gave up my palace season ticket for it and don't regret it. South Australia has lots of palace fans who meet at the Adelaide casino to watch the games. They love their sport Gere but are the worst losers on earth, they can't handle it.in general people are happy here and friendly, not like south London where anger and attitude live. I love Australia and Australians. Standard of living here is so much better, you're all being ripped off.
