I feel that although we do have some tough games between now and the end of the season, we are still i think in a better position to pull clear. If you look at Middlesbrough, they have a horrendous last 6 fixtures and also they are all pretty much in a cluster i.e. one tough game follows another. In contrast, we have one tough one, followed by a winnable one. Also people have to remember, we suddenly have more confidence now, we look more like the team that was 5th in the Premier at Christmas 2015. Back then, all of us were confident we could go to places like Anfield and get results ( we did as well, beating the scousers 2-1 ) and i would argue we have an even better team now than back then. I think Sunderland will go this season (at long last!!) and Hull cannot score enough goals to win games. We have a gap now, and if we keep playing to the standard we showed at West Brom, we should easily get to 35 points which should be enough this year for safety

If the players as a collective want it enough they will survive with points to spare. Up until Saturday there hadn't really been the strong sign that they did plus a distinct lack of needed quality made the situation look very bleak indeed but it looks like the club may have pulled the rabbit out of the hat with some of the new signings. Still nail-biting time and relegation is still 50/50 considering our run-in but that 50/50 is a huge leap forward after that 0-4. For the first time since Watford away I can say, after Saturday, there are probably three worse teams than us in that bottom 7. Just.

So, like many others on here, You were wrong to write your own team off completely with plenty of points still to play for?

That team was definitely going down. There are three maybe four better players here now. We still might go down with our run in but at least now there is genuine hope rather than blinkered/blind optimism. Put it this way - if we hadn't had got Sakho on loan then we would still have major problems. One player. What a difference, eh?

We MUST beat Hull and Burnley. If we win those I'm very confident we will be ok.

Not seen Bournemouth's run in but I certainly wouldn't discount them from the relegation picture, plus they have problems at both ends of the pitch in spite of their result at the weekend. Leicester and Swansea are both looking much better but still don't have enough points to be considered safe. Also if we beat Watford in our next game we will only be 3 points behind them with a better goal difference. Burnley's next 2 games are away from home and their away record is abysmal (2 points all season I believe) and then they have Spurs at home in the following game. While they are 6 points above us we could conceivably erode that difference over the next 3 games. They don't have any "home bankers" with Stoke probably the easiest of their remaining home fixtures. Their away games are more winnable but they've shown they lack confidence and tactics to play away from home.

After today's game each of the bottom 7 will have 11 matches left. Interesting to look at how many of those games involve the bottom seven playing each other. Bournemouth on 27 points .............. 4 against those around them, 2 at home and 2 away Leicester on 27 points ..................... 3 against those around them, 2 at home and 1 away Swansea on 27 points ..................... 4 against those around them, 1 at home and 3 away Palace on 25 points ......................... 2 against those around them, 2 at home and 0 away Boro on 22 points ............................ 4 against those around them, 1 at home and 3 away Hull on 21 points ............................. 4 against those around them, 3 at home and 1 away SAFC on 19 points .......................... 5 against those around them, 2 at home and 3 away This is how a Sunderland fan sees hope, that we only have two against those around us.
