Sam hires a psychoanalyst. We are definitely mentally weak. This should help.

He's a sports psychologist not a psychoanalyst; two very different things. Very sloppy journalism. ..it could help.

This is a sound introduction to the staff. Going forward there is such a great need for the club to take the mental side of player's development and well-being seriously.

At the moment the players look completely devoid of motivation and belief in their abilities, unless it is addressed it will effect the new players also. So it's great to see something being done, hopefully the players can start to build upon their performances each week now.

In the Dowie-era we had John Harbin, who was a sports psychologist as well as fitness coach, and he did a pretty good job, including putting us in the right frame of mind to beat 'the original academy' in the playoff final, by going 'just one more round'.

Didn't I read somewhere that we used to have one but pardew got rid of him because he didn't believe in it?

Harbin did a spell at Plymouth Argyle and did a very good job until the managers changed and he got his P45.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

Believe in what? Sports psychology or a winning mentality?

As far as I can see Pardew completely ignored anything to do with the mentality or soft skills involved in playing football. Positivity, communication, leadership - all out the window. Technical skills were all that counted for anything, So on that basis Jedinak for example was no longer up to snuff so out the door he went. Didn't stop to think about the less tangible aspects of his game and his wider role in CPFC at all. Speroni pretty much the same. Dumped the captaincy on Dann without understanding why that wouldn't work, then wouldn't review it. Et cetera, et cetera.

Allardyce understands the importance of these things but when a squad's heads have been f***ed up to this extent it's hard to fix in-season. And that brings us to what Pardew thought he was doing with the squad in the summer...

Absolutely.
I only wish I could be as eloquent.

All this psychology stuff is a load of tosh. It just gives players an excuse for their ineptitude. England brought one in for the last two tournaments. That didnt go too well did it

Dismissing the mental side of the game is tosh. Ability can only take you so far. No matter what the sport the one who's mentally stronger comes out on top in the majority of cases. This team is beaten mentally before they even walk out on the field, if something then goes against them they collapse. Jesus, we are a text book case this season.

It worked well for us in 2003/04. It isn't all a team needs for success, but it could make the difference for a team that has talent, but is underperforming. To label something we haven't tried for a while as "an excuse for...ineptitude" seems rather Luddite to me.
