Odd interview! 'I want to clear up that I didn't want silly money... Although I did want quite a lot of money.'

Quite patently is was all about the money.
From what he said he doesn't sound like the sort of guy you want in a relegation battle,in fact he seemed prepared to accept relegation as long as he didn't have to take a pay cut.

I didn't realise he was 25, thought he would have got the hint that Arsenal don't want him anymore

Seems reasonable to me. He is contracted until 2020 with Arsenal.

If he came to Palace on roughly the same money he would face a 40% pay cut after only 5 months of regular football if we get relegated.

I think in hindsight most people would wait for a better opportunity!

Have to say I agree with this. Not sure I'd rusk looking 50% of my wages after 5 months.

Depends how much you actually want to play football?
No one else came in for him, obviously he didn't feel we had the team to stay up?

Plus it should be a decrease in wages if we go down, only right, incentive to get stuck in and make a difference.

To be honest, if he can't survive on a 40% pay cut then what are we all doing?
Secondly, if you rate yourself, you ask for a bonus if you beat the drop.
Thirdly, have a release clause not hard.

30 k week at worse? after tax, 800,000 jesus.

Someone should have advised him to keep his trap shut. It rarely pays to air dirty washing.

I wonder if Allardyce has a similar clause in his contract

"We'll pay you what you're currently getting and would like you to come and give your all for us. However, if it doesn't work out (and it probably won't) .... we'll cut your wages by 40% in June."

Hmmm .... if THAT was really the offer it doesn't sound too appealing!

It was the relegation clause that did it but he would still have been on around £30k/week in the Championship so not the end of the world.
He wasn't prepared to take the chance and so didn't have faith in Palace staying up - fair enough - that is his choice.
He will continue to rot in Arsenal's reserves until June and then he might get a move away but note that we were the only Club after him!
He may have shafted himself and comes across as happy to take the money and not play - glad we didn't get him to be honest!
