Might seem an odd question, but given our struggles of late have been in a very particular area, what would people rather see on Saturday?

a) We tighten up and look solid, but as a consequence don't look quite as threatening going forward, and it's a 0-0. We deal with set pieces well and there is good communication evident between the keeper and centre halves.

b) Same as the last few weeks, only this time we finally manage to outscore our opposition. Southampton score at least one from a set piece, but Palace win 3-2 in another 'thriller'.

Are the three points the be all and end all, or is it more important that Pardew AND the players show they are actually capable of defending better?

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

We need an ugly result that shows passion and hard graft - bodies on the line kind of stuff.
We need to get in the faces of Southampton and let them know they are in for a tough afternoon.
A ground out small margin win would suit me just fine!

We need points and a win. Perhaps 5-4 to us wouldn't be a bad result in the circumstances !

Oops.meant the highlighted text until end of season.
Grind it out and win ugly until the end of next season. We do not have enough quality players to play this 'entertaining' football Pardew thinks we play.

If we keep Soton down to four shots on target or less it will be a significant improvement. Swansea had nine. How many they score from those four shots though who knows?

Any points with any score would be good right now.

At this stage a result and points are vital. Yes we need to improve our defence as soon as possible, but this weekend I believe 3 points, whether from a 1-0 or 6-5 win, is crucial to the teams confidence and morale, and of course, our future in the top flight (to say nothing of Pardew's position at the club).

For some reason I feel mildly optimistic about the Saints game. They haven't been very consistent this season. They are coming to us on a run of three good results so it must be time for them to slip up again - PLEASE.
