Ok first of all, this is not a Pardew in or out conversation so either way I am not interested. However...

If it wasnt for the set pieces costing us, we would be mid table right now, possibly higher. The players are being positioned correctly, the keepers have done everything right. We are actually playing good football, outplaying a lot of sides but we just keep giving away silly goals from set pieces. What is the teams lacking? The problems look like they are at the back but its hard to see what it is exactly. Its really important as its something the players dont seem able to fix, it looks like we would have the same problem with any manager...

Any ideas guys because I am stumped...

I think its a combination of things. There's a lack of understanding across the back 4 (as well as the keeper) and its not helped by having the line up change.

Concentration is probably the main culprit. Not only are we conceding from set pieces but we're conceding in the last 5 - 10 mins of the match (including time added on).

We don't play to the final whistle, I wonder what the stats for conceding the the last 10 are - I bet we're the worst. The problem with this is that we don't have time to get back into it and its really demoralizing to the team. We need to keep a few clean sheets to get the confidence back. But don't ask me how, if I knew I'd be at Selhurst Park talking to SP!

Would respectfully suggest at least two full matches (on training ground each week) of 90 minutes plus extra time with both next levels (Development Squad/ Accadamy) with one of those groups starting first halves and the other starting the second halves - and no more than three substitutions - except for tight hamstrings (do not want our lads physically damaged - we are looking to enhance their concentration so they (and we) get something out of their recent good play (when they are all concentrating). Matches Monday and Wednesday for the next two weeks could focus first team minds suitably. COYP

Full backs are poor. Don't stop crosses. Give away too many free kicks. Tompkins not as good as we hoped. Goal keepers not sufficiently commanding and poor at defending direct free kicks. And unable to learn from the same mistakes.

Apart from that we're not too bad lol

I'm stumped a bit too, but I believe it's LEADERSHIP. There's no-one on the pitch taking charge. Jedinak was very underestimated by Pardew. Sure, I accept he ought to have been replaced, but he wasn't replaced, not his ability to take charge of the players, to read the big picture, to command respect and obedience. Honestly, most of the soft goals scored against us, I could literally SEE the players confusion and lack of purpose. And not just this game. I simply do not believe that with Jedi playing our defence would be as deplorable as it is now. We are lacking a captain. Look at Pardew's excuses for the last bunch of games - always not being able to get information out to the players.

These guys don't become bad players overnight, so something has changed from when we kept clean sheets but couldn't score goals. I think our keepers this season have been good stoppers but poor organisers and are as scared of crosses as Dracula! Don't know how good Mandanda's english is and Hennessey might as well be speaking welsh for all the organising he does.

Bring back Speroni. He is a better stopper than these two, is prepared to catch high balls, and not afraid to shout at his defence in spanish or english.

It doesn't help mind you when the manager comes out before the game and says we need to score 2 because we cant defend!

This is an easy question to answer. NO Accountability from the top Down either for Pardew and his coaching staff or Scott Dann as Captain and the players. A great deal should land at the feet of Pardew and his staff for lack of preparation. But once the match has started Scott Dann has to Lead on the pitch and I've seen precious little of that. I can't comment what goes on in the Locker Room area because I don't know what goes on or what is said with any of that. But on the pitch we're Leaderless and it shows every week.

Dann and Tompkins have not gelled that is apparent. Usually takes a while for a central defensive pair to learn to work together, but not this long. Because of this, our fullbacks are pulled more out of position to cover, be in lack of faith in the centers or being instructed to do it.
Last 3 games there has been at least 1 goal you can blame on the central defensive pairing not being where they should be.

He have the 5th highest goal tally in the league.

I know defending is not just the back 4, but too often i have seen WIckham or JP or even Zaha back there where you would expect to see Dann or Hopkins.

tomkins stinks. WHU sold him for a reason. he's out of place consistently DD is an old donkey but he makes few mistake. our GA last year were average. he did his job. tomkins is always out of place. he's a backup at best, which is what WHU had him rated. not a starter.

We are ALL in agreement that things are seriously wrong. The problem is that no one can pinpoint the problem. Worse still our manager is blaming things that are not being put right. For instance all very well bemoaning Wickham injury, but Wickham has hardly been in the team?
My opinion is when a team/ club sinks this low e.g. Six defeats in a row there is something seriously wrong with the structure throughout.
We have seen it elsewhere. Take Chelsea as a classic example. In a right old mess last year under Morinho. Nobody could pin point it. It couldn't be the manager he was just too good. The fans loved him. Finally he went. Now look at them. Pretty much the same squad playing the best football ever and top of the league.
I rest my case.

I think there are a number of factors but for me it started with Pards announcing that we were looking to transition, and play a more expansive, flowing brand of football. That meant no one has been helping out the defence and indeed the full backs have become part of the attack, not the defence. Pardew himself said defending was not his priority. I bet training has been about his new attacking style and not defending. But now he has woken up to the fact it is about defending properly as well, it is to late - you now have a defence whose confidence is in tatters and no one takes responsibility. That means they are not even getting the basics right, and it is clear Dann is not the leader we hoped, to help sort it out. So we remain good going forward which is what he wanted but has only now realised that we still need to defend properly - and will take time to sort and build confidence. Question is whether Pards can do that. I no longer think he is.

Pretty much how I see it. There is no lack of effort, don't think Pardew has lost the dressing room and away from our own area you'd be pleased with what you're generally seeing. Watching the game last night, we were in total charge of that game up to the Swansea equaliser and deservedly ahead. But there is something not right. The majority of our players are good enough to be at least mid table in this division and I'm sure come the end of the season we will be, but I am mystified as to how this calendar year has turned into such a disaster.

It's always easy to blame the manager when results aren't good, but there should be a lack of effort or wrong tactics or wrong team selection to attach the blame, and I just don't see that and I genuinely don't think changing the manager is the answer. Injuries, bad luck? I just don't know, but what is Pardew's job is to find out what the problem is right now before it is too late.
