What are the odds of a truly successful club ever being so fixated on having former players in charge? Where has this happened with any great success? yet there's time after time clubs pander to this notion and appoint former players, with poor to awful results.

It's a small time attitude and is the opposite of appointing on merit. We need to move away from it ASAP frankly.

Just a few off the top of my head.

Pep Guardiola - Barcelona
Diego Simeone - Atletico Madrid
Kenny Dalgish - Liverpool
Graeme Souness - Rangers
To a lesser extent Beckenbauer and Bayern Munich

These teams are all European giants, Palace are I'm afraid not.

There is no club that has appointed a succession of former players with any success (in fact I'm not sure there's ever been another club that's so obsessed with appointing ex-players to posts within the organisation). Managerial appointments (all appointments) should be made on the basis of the best applicant for the job, irrespective of their playing history.

Mowbray and Southate for Boro
Souness and Evans at Liverpool
Vialli, Gullit, and Hoddle at Chelsea
Hoddle at Spurs

the list goes on and on of ex-players who have been failures as managers at their clubs.

Do cups not count as success then? without checking i'm pretty certain souness and evans both won cups at Liverpool and maybe Gullit and Vialli at Chelsea.

I don't know any Liverpool fans that think Souness or Evans were successes. Vialli and Gullit had appalling records as Chelsea managers given the money they were spending.

You're going to get examples of successful and unsuccessful managers who were ex players, but I agree that a playing career (whether at Palace or not) should have no bearing on whether someone gets the job or not.

If they're a good coach/ manager then I don't care about their playing history.
