Funny article from fourfourtwo about Pards. If you can't laugh you cry.

I think he will say: 'It has been a difficult time for all of us what with Trump being elected, Walker's crisps increasing in price, Toblerone decreasing in size, and the Office for National Statistics claiming that women do more household chores than men. I mean what about cutting the grass and doing the BBQ? The team did magnificently to keep the difference down to seven given the collective sense of trauma and loss. I am proud of them'.

Yes, I heard on the radio that it's because of Brexit. Honestly. The weak pound is making imported ingredients more expensive. I know someone who works as a buyer for Kettle crisps and he confirmed that seasonings and particularly oil has become very expensive.

Sounds like any old excuse to put prices up. These naughty corporates are trying to pull a fast one. I hereby pronounce it to be bollocks.

It's a simple mistake to assume that the major ingredient in crisps is Gary Lineker's advertising fees but it seems that it isn't as the biggest cost is the packaging which is imported.

Well my maths may be suspect but as far as I can figure out if these guys are buying ingredients in Europe and the pound/euro is the currency they are using then in 2016 they have seen the exchange rate drop from around 1.3 to 1.1 (and slightly lower at times). By my reckoning that's more than 10% so they would be making less money simply by trading under the previous circumstances. If they work in dollars there would have also been a poorer exchange rate but I haven't looked closely at that situation. You could argue that they must be selling more in Europe because of the strong Euro but that depends in the size of their European market and whether any price differential is passed onto the consumer.

Like Pardew the British economy stands on the edge of a precipice right now. The difference is I think Pardew will turn things around, whereas there doesn't appear to be much hope for the economy, at least not in the sort to mid term. Perhaps there is an analogy to be made for voting out?

What this thread is doing here is puzzling but never mind. I worked in the food ingredients industry for most of my life. The contribution that the ingredients, or the packaging, make to the consumer price of convenience foods, like crisps, is minimal. The ex factory cost per unit will be just a few pence, whilst the consumer price might be a pound. Things like meat or veg are different. Nevertheless, because of the volumes involved, the manufacturers do face heavy cost pressures because of the fall in the value of the £. For a long time the supermarkets have squeezed the profit away from food manufacturers so they are now trying to take advantage of public perceptions and raise prices. This will be, as always, a battle between the manufacturers and the retailers. Increases of a penny or two could be justified. 10% increases could not be. In most cases 10% would exceed the total cost of the raw materials involved.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Can't they buy the spuds from the Irish? They always go on about them being the best and the import costs will be minimal. Maybe Walkers needs to scale back its range and cut all of the exotic ingredients - who really eats paprika, saffron & teriyaki crisps anyway? Bring back the good old plain, salt & vinegar and cheese & onion. Buy British.
