The took a massive hit in terms of funding with austerity cuts (on top of continual cuts under the last three Governments, despite the massive rise in the prison population produced by New Labour. Dangerously underfunded, under resourced and under staffed.

Simple solution to this. Put all the guards from Southern into the Prison Service. They can open and close doors to their hearts content and health and safety is a winner too. And they get to keep their job.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

New Prisons need to be built. Inmates are being housed in prisons that were built donkeys years ago. If we built bigger and better prisons with state of the art cctv and lock down barriers they would not need so many officers. Our prisons are so soft, everyone i know that has served time have said its not what they thought it would be like and once they got jobs inside it was cushty. Its no detterent. If they made the system harder for prisoners they might not keep reoffending. If i was homeless and living on the streets i would commit a crime to get locked up where it is safer, warmer and i get fed 3 times a day and get money for treats.

The facts are funds have been slashed, whilst inmate numbers gradually rise, in 2010 they got rid of 10'000 experienced officers and now the service is being offered 2100 newbies, what about the other 8000 members of staff, that's roughly 60 officers per prison. The systems completely f***ed up, and hearing her talk about th re-offending problem, criminals usually leave prison as better criminals. No matter how much money you throw at the problem, you arnt going to rehabilitate people who don't want to be rehabilitated. After Christmas, certain kiddies prisons are going to supply iPads to all kids, how is this a deterrent to people who on the whole don't have such luxury products in their life outside prison.

Well, we'll just have to shoot them. And send the bill for the bullets to their families.

Like Health & Education it has been used as apolitical weapon and governments have usually been too scared to be seen as soft Prisons need to be functional. Its interesting that our soft European cousins who have a far more lenient and less punishing prison regime, also manage a greater level of rehabilitation. We need to focus prison service entirely around the idea of producing potential citizens, rather than ex-cons, and identifying those who 'aren't interested in rehabilitation and separating them from the general prison population (and possibly from society in general). Prison doesn't have to be hard, but it needs to be firm and fair. Not automatically early release, no unearned luxuries, no boredom. Education, and incentivise self improvement, with therapy and treatment aimed at core underlying problems that feed into offending. With every privillage earned through participation.
