Why do we describe players as boyhood fans?

Title says all, read a lot of football journalism and describe players like Dann for example as a boyhood Liverpool fan, surely you don't grow out of supporting your club despite playing for other clubs. Are players allowed to support clubs openly or is it a conflict of interest?

Just curious!

If i was good enough and was getting a fortune each week i wouldnt have a problem scoring against palace. Anyone who says differently is lying.
