The idea that we can 'raid' any other PL team, particularly the bigger ones like Man U and Arsenal (see below), with the possible exception of the newly-relegated, is probably a flight of fancy.

It is not really raiding if you are going for players these clubs do not want. Then, however, they have to be good enough for us and not considered just because they were initially signed by one of the so called big clubs.

A serious question.....If Derby County had some players that we were interested in would this be a ram raid?

Do you like any of our existing players?
From what I can see every post of yours has been about replacing them. Lol

Maybe I'm just overly suspicious about colourless & odorless gasses

In answer to your question though, do we need another LW, DM, (awful) CB, or a RB? I'd have thought those are the least needed positions really (bar GK), and bringing in loanees, usurping our existing players might put a few noses out of joint. Depay could be a decent yannick replacement, but I feel permanent deals is what we should be looking at, especially as our loanee spots are taken.

I agree definitely a fanciful idea, that Pardew and Parrish could raid anyone, as a raid is a rapid surprise attack on an enemy. There not the SAS.

If you want a player you pay the going price, then pay their huge wages they are already on for sitting in the reserves.

In the dim and distant past we sometime bought players that other clubs had overpaid for and wanted to get rid of, such as Akinbiyi and Kuqi. That didn't work out too well, don't see any of these being any different.

Anyway, why buy a player because of the club he plays for, surely it would be better to assess whether a prospective player would enhance our team, not solve another clubs problem in getting rid of a bad buy they have made?

None of these would make an appreciable difference to the players already here.

I read this morning that both Blind and Smalling might get sold to make way for a revamp of uniteds defence.

If we could lure one or both to us then that would seriously beef up our defence.

Dann, Tomkins and Smalling as either a central three or switching between them subject to injuries etc...

Blind could give cover / competition to right back / holding midfield.

Ok neither might want to come play for the mighty eagles, but if they get sold they've got to go somewhere and I doubt United would want to sell to top six club. So unless they go abroad we could be in with a shout.

Even if these were the only signings we make in the next year I'd still be very impressed.

Blind will probably go back to Europe.
Rojo will probably go back to South America

But Smalling is an interesting one. If none of the big clubs want him, then Palace could be an option and unless I'm wrong he started his football career in the south-east.

Trouble is though, Southgate (like many predessors) seems to like picking players from the top teams only. Even if he was in the United reserves, he would have a better chance playing for England than playing 1st team football at Palace.

Also, that Bailly is out for a couple of months as well, so United wont want to sell leaving them short.

big clubs or not, prem wages in a strong london club we can get him. worried about this allardyce switch though, whether he does us well or not.
