If the rumours are true in that Conte/Chelski are after Michael Keane from Burnley then i'd like to us to approach them for Cahill.

As a Centre Back he still has a lot to offer, he's 5 years younger than Damo and in Dann/Tomkins he could very well allow us to playa back 3.

For England it would also be a good move.

Why would we want to do that? It's not one of the least used formations for nothing.

Like everything in life there are cycles...a back 3 would allow a potential plan B...the fact it IS now one of the least used formations means it would be unusual to play against....staying with the flock like sheep isn't always the answer...being willing to change BEFORE others do sometimes is.

I'm certainly not suggesting that i'd like to see a back 3 permanently but at least it'd provide the ability to be flexible when its called for.

I cannot vouch statistically as to it's use worldwide, but I know that Conte and Mazzari used this defensive "Shape" in Italy and Flores used this at Watford last season.Watford last night started with a back three.

Having studied the tactics used by Bielsa, he favoured a 'Back Three' throughout his career and has used 3-3-1-1, 3-4-3 and 3-3-3-1 amongst others.

Cahill would expect to be starting every week at Palace.

Unless we played with a back 3, then he wouldn't replace a recent £10m signing or Scott Dann....

Interesting that a couple of people think that he wouldnt get in our team....i'd disagree and see him as a better defender to both Tomkins and Damo and has greater experience than Dann.

Surely competition in that department is exactly what we'd be after, however i'd agree that coming from Chelsea he may want some sort of guarantee with regards to game time.

At this present time Cahill is playing the poorest football of his career and you want The Palace to buy him.
I'll leave it to AP.

Willo, when you studied Bielsa's tactics the 3 3 1 1 team must have been very good.!!

Whenever I see references to Cahill I am reminded of Martin O'Neill's comment about him; that he can do everything except defend.

The same has been said of John Stones and David Luiz.

It must be some 10 years ago that O'Neill commented that Cahill has a lot of talent but makes elementary mistakes. But he has improved since then with experience.
