He is not needed now, is he? However, as he is still there, and as a lot of posters seem to think it wasn't such an important Cup match yesterday, why not play Speroni in that match? - it would have been a record-breaking 389th appearance in goal for Palace.

I still wish he had been used in goal a year ago when his injury had healed. However, that is in the past, and time moves on.

I wonder why Jules stays.

He's comfortable. Kids are settled in a local school. Knows his days are numbered and maybe he's happy with a support role at the club.

We need three keepers and he's apparently happy to be third choice and presumably trouser a decent wage,

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Two reasons

1. Who would run his restaurant?
2. He happy to accept being 3rd choice

Would you leave if you were 1 appearance off becoming the record appearing GK? He clearly believes he's got a chance of breaking that record.

Plus the other reasons people have mentioned

He's been quoted several times that he wants to be back in goal, so maybe hoping for that, and the other reasons above.

Well quite possibly he earns more in a week than most of us earn in a year...but then Benteke earns as much in a week as I earn in 4 years. If we really get uppity about players wages then we should have all stopped supporting professional football decades ago. Gone are the days of Jim Cannon driving around in a small Peugeot with advertising on the side.

Perhaps, more charitably, we could say JS is a loyal fellow who represents better value than most as a third choice keeper. (Cheaper than McCarthy, I'd imagine) He could have cleared off to other clubs a number of times in his prime and "trousered" higher wages...but he didn't.

There is but one king, and his name is Jules. Absolutely one of the most important players we've had in a generation, possibly more - and arguably the most important keeper we've had.

True, Martyn was better, but Speroni's performance during the dark Jordan years were on a par with a 20 goal a season striker, for three or four seasons in a row.

Without him, we'd be talking about how important it is to have a consistent season in the Championship, now were back where we belong.

As far as I'm concerned he can stay 'on the books' until his sons are old enough to don the gloves.

Also, we are duty bound to give him that appearance. Even if its five minutes.

If Paddy McCarthy can milk our system, why can't Jules?

This.

I remember John Jackson - kept us in the First Division single-handed for 4 years in the early 70s. Happy that Speroni has equalled his appearances for all his excellent work during our darker days, but he should not get another game just to beat JJ's record. Unfortunately he showed at Southampton at the end of last season and at Fulham pre-season that he is our number 3 choice now.
