Tonight was bad... very bad! It goes to show we really have no other option than to go wide when attacking. We can't play through the middle and it's as simple as that. Hennesey- good performance and good saves in first half. 7/10... Ward- passing was terrible showed nothing going forward. 4/10... Delaney- solid as usual 7/10... Kelly- I know centre back is his preferred position but it certainly isn't his strongest position, clumsy for the penalty as well! 4/10. Fryers... I was full of optimism for him I really was. Decent pre season and was waiting for him to get his chance. He was awful! Truly awful! Every cross went wayward. Terrible going forward and also looked knackered after 50 mins. 2/10... mutch.. didn't do anything! Awful! 1/10. Cabaye... surely he's lost his place in our starting eleven? Parse would be mad to put him in a winning team in the league? 5/10... zaha.. tried hard crosses were poorly a lot of the time was kept quiet a lot of it 5/10. Sako... looked unfit didn't do anything 4/10.
Lee.... again tried hard but was very ineffective, he didn't take anyone on didn't create anything 4/10. Wickham.... again I have done nothing but praise him and really hoped he would come good, don't get me wrong he is still young with a lot of potential. Tonight he was bad, didn't read the game well benteke done a great flick to him and he wasn't expecting it. He also should have scored when benteke headed it onto him but he didn't take it first time and McCarthy smothered it. 3/10 subs: benteke 7/10 caused problems straight away! Puncheon tried deliveiring quality but couldn't 4/10 and I know dan wasn't a sub he went off injured 6/10

I agree with all of those apart from one. You were too generous to Mutch

what's worrying is our complete lack of depth in out squad.

Southampton rest similar numbers and looked so much better.

Really need people like Kelly, Sako, Wickham and Lee to be pushing those in the first 11 but all 4 were off the pace.

I keep hoping that Mutch will seize his opportunity but yet again failed to do so and as for Cabeye I just fail to see how someone who was so good can play so poorly. He should be that creative spark we have lacked in midfield for so many years but it is clear he can no longer play that role.

Team for Sunderland, barring injuries, picks itself
