Hello,

I'm a longtime Palace fan from the US, traveling to London in February, and I'm planning to go to the match against Boro on February 25th, with my wife.

I have a bunch of questions, if you could give any advice, I would greatly appreciate it...

1) What's the best place to get 2 tickets for the match?

2) What is a good place to sit, or places to avoid? I'm older, so the less rowdy the better. More expensive seats are ok.

3) I'm staying at a hotel near Hyde Park. What's the best way to get to/from the match from there? Can I take a taxi? I rarely get to London, so not familiar at all with the city, or the area around Selhurst.

Thank you in advance!!
John

Maybe you should look at the International Membership the club runs from its website ( [Link] ) you get a Matchday programme sent via E-Mail for every home game that will help you keep up to date with the club in general but it will also allow you to pre-book tickets for the Boro game. Its only $60 and offers a couple of other benefits as well. You want to get seats in the Main Stand and my advice is to ring the box office but make sure to ask for seats with a full view as some are partial because of steel columns. If your not familiar with London and don't mind the expense I would get a taxi as you can enjoy the day more without the extra hassles of journey planning and walking that would be involved with public transport.Im sure someone else would be able to give you a rough idea of how much a taxi would cost and who to book with and maybe it would be an idea to post on here nearer the time if you had any further questions.I hope you have a great time and enjoy that special feeling all Palace fans get walking into Selhurst.

To add to your experience and save some cash go by tube (London underground) and train - it's pretty easy from Hyde Park. Get the tube to London Victoria and then a train from there to Selhurst. Its a 10 min walk from there and you can stop at the Clifton Arms at the bottom of the holmesdale road for a pre match drink. Have fun!

Very much this. Unless you're a very nervous tourist I would avoid using a cab as getting to Selhurst Park is easy. Get the Underground from Hyde Park Corner or Green Park which will get you to Victoria in a few minutes. From Victoria Station there are trains every 10 minutes to Selhurst Station and take 25 minutes from Selhurst Station it is a 5 to 10 minute walk and will take you to the Holmesdale/ Main Stand side of the ground.

Get the international membership so that you can get tickets in the main stand where the calmer/ older fans tend to go. Depending on which section of the stand you get into their are a few bars which sell decent beers but obviously get very crowded around game time.

Enjoy your visit. Palace fans are mostly a very friendly bunch.

Just checked Selhurst Park on TripAdvisor, [Link] An enjoyable read but feel for those away fans. I 'lol manage to get over it though. 😆

I noticed you said you were older so don't take this question as patronising but have you heard of Uber?

Black taxi's are horrendously expensive and so are regular taxi companies in Central but I understand why a tourist wouldn't want to get trains and tubes.

Uber is a smartphone app that will get you there much cheaper. I'd reccomend getting someone to show you it in America and use it once or twice yourself and then the same principle applies in London.

Hi John

International membership is the way to go. But I would definitely use public transport (Mainline overground) to attend the game. If you are staying by Hyde Park then you may be able to walk to Victoria station, or maybe a very short bus ride. Using the Underground isn't a sensible option as you'd have to change (at Green Park - which is long)

The buses in central London are very civilised - use them to get a real feel of the city where possible.

See you at the at the Palace

Might be a silly advice, but do not take a train (or a bus) to Crystal Palace but to Selhurst

I've seen a few travelling fans get tricked but this one.

If you are not a regular Public Transport user forget it and get a cab.

Hyde Park Corner to Victoria is just about easy enough providing you get out at the correct place and find the correct side of Victoria Station. You will definitely need to ask for advice of yours not used to it.

You will then need to look out for a train which goes to Selhurst Park. It will be packed like Sardines. It is a good 25 minute ride (add in your wait at Victoria Station which according g to Murphy's law will mean you have just missed one!)

The walk at a sensible pace and not doing a Sebastian Coe type bolt will mean a 15 minute walk to the ground; I would allow a touch more
if you are walking at s relaxed normal pace. 5-10 minutes is a virtual run and not realistic.

In short realistically, it is well over an hour on public transport and walking from Hyde Park.

As above. If you are Alien to South London - get a cab.

This is good advice, but you miss out on part of the match experience if you're not walking along from one of the nearby stations with other fans.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

I've been to many grounds in several countries and always use the public transport. Compared to many of the places I've visited getting to Selhurst Park is a doddle. I've rarely found the trains to the ground that busy and have nearly always got a seat. I tend to stay for a beer after the game and get a later train so avoid all the crowds going back to one of the three stations near SP thus avoiding packed trains. It really is easy.

As for taking 15 minutes to get from Selhurst station to the ground you must be walking at a slow stroll and taking in the beautiful views around SE25. 😉

Unless you have mobility issues take public transport to the game.
