Many thanks for taking the time to read this. I am a Barnsley and England fan based in St Petersburg, who is involved in a project, the aim of which is to help travelling supporters have fun, and stay safe at Russia 2018 and beyond, and avoid many of the common pitfalls and complications associated with travelling to and around Russia – such as language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and difficulties in finding decent places to eat, accommodation and transport tickets at a reasonable price. Even if you are not intending on travelling to Russia 2018, if you have travelled abroad in the past to support your club or country, your information is invaluable to us. We are especially (but not exclusively) interested in the experiences of fans who travelled to Ukraine in 2012, as we are sure that many of the logistical problems which cropped up there will be repeated in Russia. The survey can be found here - [Link] - and will take about five minutes to fill in. You can also find us on Facebook - [Link] - and our full website and app for download are planned for launch in the next few months. If you wish to contact me directly for any reason, you can drop me a line at john@worldcup-2018.info . THIS PROJECT IS 100% INDEPENDENT AND UNOFFICIAL. Best wishes, and good luck for the season. Cheers, John

I'm sorry but no way would I travel to Russia 2018. First of all, the whole bidding process was corrupt. However, after my rant I may fill in your survey - in the interests of academic integrity.

I think you'll find that if they don't have the competition 'removed' from them, you wont be getting many foreign fans coming to watch 'soccer' in Russia, Physco nut job fans or not.

My sentiments exactly. Those Russians at the Euros were out of line. As were the comments from the Russian politicians who basically refused to condemn their actions. Imagine what it'll be like in Russia. No thanks

Violence at the Euros, State-sanctioned doping at the Olympics, fixed award to host the World Cup. These should be kicked out of world sport forthwith.

I have been avoiding (as far as possible) coverage of the Olympics - nothing at all to do with the athletes, though. The IOC is just FIFA with different letters, and its whole system is corrupt to its core. More than that, the games end up being an extraordinary windfall for local officials and their favourite contractors, while the local (poor) population gets royally screwed. The next summer Olympics is in Dubai. The winter games are going back Beijing in 2022. Seriously, the Olympics needs a single, purpose-built venue (one each for summer and winter). The only reason to move it around the world is to keep the tsunami of under-the-table cash flowing. I say this because it's going to be the same for the next two World Cups. I cannot countenance supporting - by my viewership - the corruption and death that is swirling around these two events. I certainly will not be attending either for the same reason and also due to the significant personal risk. The dangers in Russia are well understood, but no one knows what will happen in 2022 when the world comes to party in a country where the fun police like to beat the s*** out of drunks, punish-rape promiscuous women, execute gays and lop the limbs off alleged miscreants. Cities are getting wise to the IOC. One of the reasons the winter games is in Beijing in 2022 is because the only two bids were from China and Kazakhstan (China won 44 to 40). Norway, Sweden, Poland and Ukraine all considered bidding, and then peaced-the-f*** out. My hope is that the same happens with FIFA and the World Cup, because I won't be watching until it's cleaned up and can be viewed without having to abandon moral decency. Also, England are s*** so why bother?

For those who have access, I thoroughly recommend watching HBO's Real Sports expose on the Olympics. Edited by Ray in Houston (19 Aug 2016 3.37pm)

I think that the world should boycott the 2018 world cup because the Russians are bombing the feck out of hospitals, orphanages and homes in Syria. It's a disgrace what's happening there and no-one will get involved because they're scared of the Russians.

There are half-a-dozen countries with the infrastructure already in place who could host the 2018 finals on short notice, including England. Of course, a move would only happen if the individual competing countries boycotted the tournament. England could do the world a favour and start this ball rolling. Also, England are s*** so why bother? Tokyo. You couldn't seriously have one permanent host for each games, that would be ridiculous. No one's under any illusions that Rio couldn't afford either the World Cup or Olympics, that they'll massively lose money or that they lost lives trying to achieve it. No one will be surprised by the death count in Qatar by the time the 2022 world cup rolls around too. Russia couldn't care about the costs, for them both events are about prestige and being shown on the world stage. Sydney, London and Beijing were fine. Athens and Rio could never afford them to start with.
