Hey guys, I know this isnt really the place to ask but I have a feeling there will be plenty of Hol members who have been cashiers or are cashiers now so will be quite educated on this subject. Basically a large amount of money is going missing from my till at a BP petrol station on my overnight shift, think it was £200 pound this week and its getting f***ing ridiculous now. Lets start off by clarifying that its a petrol station most people pay for their stuff by card so no problems there, I always make sure I receive the correct change and I always give the correct amount. The job counting the money is soo piss easy since the machine always calculates for you and most people fill up their petrol to a round number so in short a 10 year old could do it! But large amounts of money is going missing from my till , its starting to freak me out. I think somebody is stealing during the day shift on my till, I don't currently count my till when I sign in or when I sign out because they've not told me or even taught me to which seems really odd.. I understand through my last job my cash register would come up short every now and then by like £5 but that was a really packed McDonalds restaurant so small amounts of money went missing all the time but at this place it is soo f***ing quiet it is impossible to make these kind of mistakes, most nights I have about 70 customers during a period of 8 hours, so its bloody graveyard! This management has been criticise for being highly inept and have had other store managers in the area come in to basically teach them how to do their jobs. This said store manager even told me how poorly this place is run and told me to not ever let them take the piss. I always count back the change to the customer and I always count the change I am given and it is always right. I am baffled to how this is happening! I seriously think something is really fishy about this place and theres a frame job going on the new guy- me.

Maybe cut out the 'w*nk breaks' for a few nights, you must be having a few a night to pass the boredom, especially with all the copies of razzle etc available.

Rule number 1. Always count the till before your shift starts and when you leave. if you don't, you could well end up getting the blame pinned on you. Cover your back mate

you have got to count your till at the start and end of every shift and sign for it etc.. most companies would make you do this. If your management aren't making you do this I'd suggest one of them is taking the money

If your management aren't making you do this I'd suggest one of them is taking the money Yeah I thought today was really strange that they arent insisting on making me count it. My other job used to sit me down straight away and say count and at the end of the shift I it rarely came up short but if it did it wasnt much of a problem since it was something like 4 quid or a fiver since they got like thousands and thousands of customers a day there was bound to be a cock up here and there. This one though it is so easy, I am behind a bulletproof window where I serve people so there is literally no way a customer could dip his hands into a till somehow, it is basically me and somebody else from 22:00-00:00 then from then to 05:00 its just me and from those periods is completely dead. I do not doubt my cash handling skills in any way what so ever, the items I get from the shop floor does not leave my hands until I am given the correct change, the customer cant take the items because there is a window preventing them from doing so. I really suspect somebody is fiddling cash so I am gunna tell em I am counting my till or I am not working.

Securing your own cover is vital. It sounds like the management is very inept (or doing the stealing) because coming up hundreds short or a regular basis, and always short is a sign either of theft or that method of reporting is flawed. But in retail, its usually staff.
