I'm not sure that we were ever in for Santon or that West Ham were that keen on Benteke but with the Hammers pronouncement that "they are no longer interested" it might persuade Liverpool to stop playing hardball otherwise they might be left with a non playing Benteke on their books if we look elsewhere

Liverpool will be sh*tting themselves at the prospect of Benteke staying on their books, they'll want that £120k p/w off their wage bill.

We still seem to be in the driving seat in terms of getting Benteke to sign, but need to do a lot of tough negotiation both with the player and with Pool. I think Benteke's hard nosed negotiation of personal teems when he is already earning a fortune, is a big turnoff. But with the new american owners onboard, and the new PL deal, if we want to proceed to conclusion with Benteke then I think the way is open. Personally I would prefer Palace to move on to a midfield playmaker/scorer like Vasquez, and a promising striker like Babacar, who is a bit more of a long shot for PL success.

In my opinion we need a PL proven striker rather than gambling on a player who may not hit the floor running. In an ideal world we'll get Benteke plus another hidden gem so there's not the same level of pressure for them to have the weight of expectation on their shoulders.

Even if we get benteke, by doing so, Wickham will have to be on his A game simply to get a look in, Wickham will respond in a positive manner as he has done all along, trekkers is a completely different level to any of last years low scorers, even with just the two of them and Campbell I'm sure it will have a positive spin for all concerned (if we sign him) Originally posted by Southampton_Eagle
