Whilst I actually agree that the playoff system is unfair, it's interesting how Brighton weren't whinging about the system last year when they were nowhere near the playoffs or the year before when they finished 6th.

The comments at the bottom are good fun. The Boro troll is really getting them to take the bait!

I'll be honest (and I know this makes me sound pathetic), I don't go on NSC but I do always have a little poke around on The Argus after Brighton hit a snag. The comments are often great. I have to admit though, this time around they have been pretty level headed about the whole thing which is a bit disappointing. Their last three season finishes have given me a lot of entertainment but this time around they've been quite composed. Good to see fans of Boro and Wednesday winding them up on there though!

They are so face-palmingly embarrassing While it's funny to see them fail year after year after year, it kinda gets boring when we know they will never actually achieve anything of note, including play at the new Wembley. They should do everyone a favour and seriously consider relegating themselves to League 1 with the other League 1 w***ers there. At least their poor, long-suffering, 'half&half' fans might stand a chance of winning something, the JPT or something equally tinpot.

I get the impression this year's fail was expensive for them. The look on Tony Bloom's face in the second leg said it all. They are clutching at straws now. That said, I agree the first place team ought to go up every year, but you look a bit less foolish campaigning for it BEFORE you've landed on your arse again.

I like Play offs, they've done a lot to make the Championship much more interesting, and I'd like to see the same approach used to resolve the 4th champions league spot on the premiership. Fair has nothing to do with a sport, where teams have wildly different financial capacity. If anything the play off introduced greater fairness, because ultimately it made the chance of promotion more accessible to a number of smaller teams. If Brighton wanted automatic promotion, they should have put in the effort against Boro on the last day of the season.

They went into this game having won 7 of their previous 9 matches but to win at Middlesbrough was a really "Tall ask".What a shame !!!!

I guess so, I have a feeling a few years back someone like Bognor Regis finished 2nd in the Ryman South, thirty something points ahead of the team that finished 5th and went out in the first playoff game against that team. But you're right about football not always being fair and my example above therefore is not relevant if we took fairness out of the equation. I do think though that the main reason for the playoffs is to generate a load more cash and that the notion that it makes the football leagues more interesting may well be true, but I think it's just a cover for the real reason they happen.
