Human stupidity regarding wild animals.

2 stories dominating the News headlines this weekend. First off the woman that went swimming at night in Australia and got carried off by a crocodile. How ferkin stupid was she? Australia has a range of dangerous beasts, Crocodiles (types comfortable in fresh and salt water), Sharks, Spiders and Snakes, and probably more us Brits aren't even aware of. If you're that stoopid to go swimming at night any where in Australia you probably deserve to die. Now the story about the 4 year old boy that fell into the moat surrounding the Gorilla pit in USA. I hate Zoos.... mostly they restrict the lifestyles of the captured animals... particularly primates like Gorillas. If you must, build wildlife safari parks. This story seems a tragic waste of life for a 17 year old Silverback Gorilla, but his death may be a release from the torment of being caged when he naturally wants to roam free. The Zoo itself was pretty stupid - how could they not be able to prevent a child of 4 being able to get through a security fence? The Mother was even more stoopid - keep an eye on your son love. She was heard to shout "Mummy Loves You" as the kid was being manhandled by the Gorilla... but Mummy didn't love her kid enough to watch what he was doing. If it was me I'd have put a bullet between the eyes of the boy's mother and at least tried to sedate the Gorilla with a dart gun before committing him to death. RIP Mr Gorilla

Quite agree the only real victim is the Gorilla. Although the woman in the first example is unlucky. Someone once told me, that more people are killed by bears in the US / Canada by trying to get their picture taken with bears, than as a result of actual bear attacks.

Yes she was unlucky.... not to have the sense to keep herself out of danger!

I agree that he dragged him quite violently by human standards, but pretty much how a gorilla would treat one of it's own young. If he actually was aggressive towards the child, it wouldn't have made it out of the water. Reminded of the similar incident at Jersey zoo 30 years ago [Link]

I guess a lot of people do the same thing, go night swimming, and only a few 'come a cropper' to borrow a term from Home and Away. People take risks all the time and get away with it, but the nature of any risk is that of course not everyone gets away with it.

Which is a shame, because the function of zoos really should be about protecting the occupants from us (arguably the moral justification of zoos stems largely from the threat that humans offer to indigenous species). From a more objective stand point, evolution would have been better served by not shooting the Gorilla and see how the kid got on.

She wrote on facebook that "God protected my child..." She should've told the zookeepers, "don't worry God's got this covered - no need to shoot". It wasn't God, it was blind luck and a rifle
