Much to the shock of Shearer and Co, at the prospect of such a talent managing in the Championship , Benitez has renegotiated a new contract to stay at Newcastle with a view to get them back where they belong at the first attempt. There is some loyalty in football, after all.

Brilliant piece of work by Newcastle, I'll be surprised if they don't win the championship next season, and amazed if they're not at the very least in the promotion spots. I think had they brought him in before the New Year, he'd have kept them up.

I have no problem with this. It should make sure Seaweed stay where they belong.

I can't really think of a time when a champions league 'top club' manager has had to face the 'championship'. Even with the distinct fiscal advantage Newcastle will take with them (presumably somewhat saddled with some McClaren dead weight). Still at least he can be sure that if they don't get promoted, it'll be Pardew's fault.

Newcastle have proved beyond doubt that the amount of money spent on players is irrelevant if it's not spent wisely

Indeed. of course he's being paid handsomely first and foremost BUT at least he didn't think that the Championship was beneath him. Especially as you could argue that the Championship is technically beneath most top managers
