I was debating with myself whether to put this in General Talk or Fun Talk. Having mulled it over, I opted for here as I think that although this definition is amusing it does carry a serious message.......... *Ironically I've had to amend certain words so as not to offend the Hol Profanity filter! What is meant by the modern term referred to as ‘POLITICAL CORRECTNESS’ The definition is found in 4 telegrams at the Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri. The following are copies of four telegrams between President Harry Truman and Gen Douglas MacArthur on the day before the actual signing of the WWII Surrender Agreement in September 1945. The contents of those four telegrams below are exactly as received at the end of the war - not a word has been added or deleted! (*see above)

Political correctness is just a modern term for something that has existed for centuries. It is just an element in the art of diplomacy.

Not sure if you're taking it seriously but: Not that we need historic figures to invalidate the idea which has slowly - to use the cliché - 'gone mad'.

I'm aware that in certain circles this story is regarded as an internet rumour that is invalid but in certain circles people believe the moon landings or the holocaust didn't happen either!

[Link] Edited by heff75 (18 May 2016 10.23am) He's kind of right, in some regards, if you define political correctness on its use as a means to attack the words people use, rather than what they are saying. Political correctness as a movement and social theory is more questioning why you would choose to use terms that other people are offended by, when you don't have to. Its really supposed to be about challenging the socially constructed discourses of prejudice inherent in social constructs, rather than individuals. Sure, you can call someone a P@ki, the question is would you be happy if they referred to you as a c**t. Because, chances are that's how people feel when you use that term to them, because their experience of being called P@ki are based in hate, threat, intimidation and abuse. Which is why the best politically correctness arguments tend to be when people call 'reverse racism / sexism etc' what they're actually engaging in is political correctness. Its about changing how we think and use language, not as a means of 'winning'. Its like when people call the BNP a sham party because they're racist, which really just reinforces their position. The politically correct astute, would look to undermine their basis on something their own members would understand (say economic policy). The more you question something 'you do, or agree with' the more you change. Sadly, for many people, the ideal has become 'what you say is wrong because you used this word', rather than bringing them to question why they believe something and ultimately, their own use of language will eventually follow.

Political correctness is designed to avoid offense but it very often used to attack others and to drive an agenda. It is manipulative in that respect.
