From BBC Sport rolling new website this morning "Steve Claridge believes the current Newcastle squad would be the best ever to suffer relegation from the Premier League." If they were even anywhere near that they wouldn't be in that position.

Agreed. On paper they probably do have the best squad out of any team previously relegated.

Maybe he's right (for once)! But the 1992-93 Palace side that included Martyn, Young, Coleman, Southgate, Thomas, Salako, McGoldrick and Armstrong and still went down with 49 points wasn't too bad either.

To be fair he's saying the best of the worst and not best of the best. If he was saying this Newcastle team should be winning the league that'd be nonsense but if you put every relegated club in a division with the same teams as when they went down this Newcastle side should walk it. I think it's no surprise that Sunderland and Villa are there but it is a big surprise that if Norwich do go down it will be because Sunderland pushed them and not Newcastle.

Claridge is a c***. Newcastle's back four is a joke. Maybe the most expensive squad ever assembled to plummet, but certainly no where near the best, even on paper. Edited by JL85 (12 Apr 2016 9.42pm)
