Sensitive debate regarding Newcastle's treatment of him during cancer recovery.

The club didn't want him for another year so they didn't trigger his clause.Might sound insensitive and thank goodness he's recovering but I can't see his problem as it happens all the time to loads of players but you don't see all them take clubs to court.Chances are that because of his age even if he didn't have that b****** disease they probably would of done the same thing, would he have taken them to court then?

Only in our crazy society could this be viewed as an issue. An employer owns you nothing other than payment for the work you provide.

I think that the bloke is making a meal of it but was surprised to read that Pardew didn't bother making contact with him at all to find out how he was

If true I'd be disappointed if I was him. Not difficult to pick up the phone. But that is only one side of the story. What are the odds on us signing him in the summer

I am delighted that he has recovered and returned to playing.Must have been truly awful not only for him but his family and friends.

I don't have a problem with the way he was treated, unless they breached his contract. Like many contractors and subcontractors, the income they receive is often significantly higher than that of permanent employees, because they're responsible for a lot of their own contributions. At the time, that suited both employer and contractor. If I got cancer, I very much doubt the company I contract to would pay me, and I wouldn't expect them too either - Likely as not, they would simply activate the notice period of the contract, and we'd go our separate ways.

The only thing about this I find bizarre is that Newcastle actually flirted with relegation rather than having to risk an additional year contract with a player who was better than most of the s**tshower they put out under Carver. Granted, he could have been given an extra year, and had to have treatment again, but given how 'well they were doing under Carver' would that really warrant not playing one of your best players in a relegation battle that went down to the last game of the season.

The contract renewal thing is common practice by clubs. If this goes in his favour surely it changes the whole footballing landscape. c***ish behaviour by Newcastle though.

Would have been funnier if things hadn't gone their way on the last day of the season, and they'd gone down. A player they really could have done with this season.
