I know they got a lot of money for him but why did Chelsea let Lukaku go while they have hung on to Bamford who again looked powderpuff for Norwich on Saturday apart from 1 long distance shot?
Lukaku always looked the part at West Brom and carried on at Everton - he was brilliant against Chelsea this weekend and that first goal was magnificent. i wouldn't be surprised if Real Madrid come looking for him whereas Bamford will go down with Norwich and end up in another Championship team. Whoever makes those decisions at Chelsea should be shot !! Wish we'd have got Lukaku instead of Bamford !!!!

Well Everton did pay something like 28m for him, which might have figured into Chelsea's thinking. I don't think anyone will be shelling out that for Bamford.

A bit of a calculated risk by Everton, but f**k me its paid off, as his current level of scoring puts him in a very elite top five, all of whom had amazing careers.

I suspect he might not be at Everton next season.

Lukaku cost them £20m as an 18 year old, Bamford cost them £1.5m as a 19 year old.

Which one can you afford to string along or pay them wages to not play for you?

Don't think it was as much as that. Don't know for sure but I have a feeling it was £10 Mill + Add-ons, the total being £18 Mill. Still, a hefty sum for a teenager and he was a Villas-Boas signing.

Benefit of hindsight, even at 20m he'd have turned out to be a great signing (and I'm pretty sure whatever the add ons, he'd have earned them out on loan).

Then again, Chelsea actually make a lot of money off of loan players, far more than they spend on them.

Certainly, when Everton came offering 28m for a player who had barely kicked a ball for them, they were probably more than tempted. It was a massive expenditure by Everton.

I suspect him to end up being sold in the 50m plus bracket. Which probably will turn out to be great business for every team in the chain (18m, sold for 28m, sold for 50+m).

Whichever way you look at it Chelsea would love to have Lukaku now and made a mistake selling him even for 28 million.
I know Bamford is at amuch lower price level but I just don't see why they hang on to him - what value would you put on him now?
From Bamford's point of view what position would he be in now if he had signed for a smaller club than Chelsea and had regular football?

At Chelsea he had to compete with Drogba,Torres,Ba, Eto'o,Sturridge,Kalou etc.
At the time he was a bit "Hot and cold" and not the best at holding the ball up.
Drogba was his hero and they keep in regular contact.

They would love him now, maybe Sturridge and Moses too but that's hindsight and a lot of managers, with a lot of differing opinions, have come and gone in the mean time.

Hanging on to Bamford is making them money. Someone else is paying his wages while us, Norwich and Boro have all paid Chelsea loan fees for him. As for where the player would be... probably with better stats but less money.

Apart from sturridge, all those listed at that time were in their prime or established beyond their prime. Mourinho has never had a 5 year plan, but to be fair, managers of his stature are always so dependent on immediate success that they don't have the security to build for a future. Sturridge is the exception that proves the point: as soon as he left he became a superstar. What value would a fit Sturridge and Lukaku be to Chelsea now? All they had to do was actually believe in their youngsters rather than simply stockpile them to comply with quotas and FFP.

I don't think Bamford is relevant in this discussion: he's never going to be a first choice Chelsea player.

Man City were just as profligate with Sturridge.

You could see he had it even back then and his performances backed it up.

If Sturbridge could keep fit he'd rival aguero for ability and impact. Potential to be the leagues best striker. Sad
